Noles Capture Three Wins on Saturday

Tallahassee, Fla. – The No. 24/NR Florida State swimming and diving teams picked up three wins on Friday at the Morcom Aquatics Center for the swimming and dive team's Seminole Heritage Meet.
The 24th-ranked men (4-0, 1-0 ACC) defeated No. 19 Alabama, 151-149, and LSU, 170-130, while the women (2-2, 0-1 ACC) split against No. 20 Alabama and LSU, 117-183 and 211-89 respectively. The men picked up their second ranked win of the season after defeating No. 23 Georgia Tech on Oct.19.
"I'm so proud with how we competed," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "The energy, the passion, they were really great. We're taking home wins from two SEC schools. It was a great day."
The Seminoles started to gain momentum after men's 100 back, led by Max Wilson (47.79), Mason Herbet (47.93) and Andrew Rich (48.80).
Leading into the break, the men's team trailed Alabama by one point and was leading LSU by a wide margin in both men's and women score.
FSU picked up a big one-two showing on 1-meter, led by Darwin Nolasco at 344.80 followed by David Varas in second (319.10). Jesco Helling added a fourth-place finish (293.00), to put the Noles right back in the hunt against the Crimson Tide.
Peter Varjasi picked up a huge win in the 100 free at 43.84. Yordan Yanchev touched second in the 500 free (4:23.67).
FSU went second, fourth and fifth in the 100 fly, as Mason Herbet was the runner-up at 47.83.
Heading into the final events, the Seminoles trailed the Crimson Tide by just 14 points, with the meet well within reach.
Once again, the divers had a big showing on 3-meter, led by Vargas with a second-place finish at 330.80 followed by Helling in fourth (322.05) and Nolasco in fifth (318.05).
Wilson took second in 200 IM (1:50.7), Utku Kurtdere in third (1:51.40) and Hebert in fourth (1:51.78).
FSU split the top relay teams and secured second and third place points against the Crimson Tide to capture the win by two points. The team of Varjasi, Eli Butters, Arijus Pavlidi and Yanchev took third overall at 1:20.54 and Schulrath, Bork, Keblys and Rian Covington (1:21.01) edged Alabama's 'B' team (1:21.23) for fourth.
In the women's meet, FSU claimed their first win in the 200 free with Maysa Ratiu at 1:50.23 after Julia Brzozowski took second in the 1000 free (10:11.65) and Ella Dyjak (10:14.35) was third.
Sophie Freeman and Edith Jernstedt placed first and second in the 200 fly. Freeman touched first at 1:59.40 and Jernstedt got second at 2:00.33.
In her first meet of the season, Samantha Vear was the winner in 1-meter diving with a score of 297.00.
Out of the break, Gloria Muzito placed third in the 100 free (50.55) and Freeman added another win, claiming the women's 200 back (2:00.30), followed by Sarah Evans in fourth (2:02.11) and Reese Hinnerichs in sixth (2:03.72).
Huggins placed second in the 200 breast (2:12.49) followed by Julia Mansson (2:19.36) in fifth.
Ratiu was the runner-up in the 500 free (4:57.78) and Freeman and Jernstedt went into the second break by going first and second in the 100 fly. Freeman touched first at 53.72 followed closely by Jernstedt at 54.30.
On 3-meter, Izzy Gregersen led the way for third place (290.95) followed by Vear in fourth (288.95).
"It was so much fun when the swimmers and divers hit on all cylinders at the same time," FSU head coach diving coach John Proctor said. "The lanes were on fire today and the vibe fed into the boards. I'm really proud of how the dive squad is coming together."
In the 200 IM, Jernstedt placed second (2:01.85) and Huggins followed in third (2:03.25).
Muzito, Alexandra Dicks, Jenny Halden and Ratiu (1:32.89) ended the day by finishing second in the 200 free relay.
The Seminoles will travel to Athens, Georgia to compete in the Georgia Invitational held between November 16-19.
