DURHAM, N.C. – The Florida State football team lost at Duke, 23-16, on Friday night at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, North Carolina.
A kickoff return for a touchdown opened the second half and kept it a one-score game for much of the game, but FSU's comeback efforts fell short on the road.
The Seminoles (1-6, 1-5 ACC) took a 3-0 lead on an early field goal and the Blue Devils (6-1, 2-1 ACC) answered with two touchdowns and a field goal to go ahead 17-3 with 10 minutes left in the second quarter.
A field goal with less than two minutes remaining in the first half made it a 17-6 game, and it was 17-13 just seconds into the third quarter on FSU's first kickoff returned for a touchdown of the season. The two teams traded field goals to make it 20-16 early in the fourth quarter before a final Duke field goal with just under nine minutes remaining secured the 23-16 final.
Florida State had 291 total yards, 162 on the ground and 129 through the air. Duke was held to 180 yards, 110 rushing and 70 passing.
Quarterback Brock Glenn was 9-for-19 for 110 yards with two interceptions. Wide receiver Ja'Khi Douglas led the team with 48 receiving yards on four catches. Running back Kam Davis ran for 63 yards on 14 carries, both team-best totals.
Linebacker Justin Cryer had seven tackles, five solo, with two tackles for loss to lead the Seminoles defensively. The team had six tackles for loss, which marks the sixth consecutive game FSU had at least five. That's the defense's longest streak of at least 5.0 tackles for loss since an eight-game string from 2021-22, which included six consecutive games to conclude the 2021 season.
Samuel Singleton Jr. scored his first career touchdown with a 95-yard kickoff return for a score to open the second half. Kicker Ryan Fitzgerald converted three of four field goal attempts, including one for 53 yards.
Additionally, AJ Cottrill blocked a Duke punt in the second quarter. It's the fourth consecutive game FSU has blocked a kick, the team's longest stretch since a five-game streak from 2001-02. That run started in the Sugar Bowl to end the 2001 campaign before blocked field goals in four consecutive games began the 2002 regular season.
Since the start of the 2020 season, FSU is tied for No. 6 nationally with 14 total blocked kicks. The Seminoles have five this season.
Florida State took a 3-0 lead on its first drive of the game, as Fitzgerald's first field goal with 10:20 left in the first quarter capped a six play, 46-yard drive.
Duke was held scoreless on its first four drives, including three three-and-outs. The Blue Devils then took a 7-3 lead on an interception and 36-yard return for a touchdown with 98 seconds left in the first quarter.
A fumble then set up Duke's next drive, which resulted in a touchdown to begin the second quarter to make it 14-3. The Blue Devils added a field goal less than two minutes later after an interception. With 10:00 remaining in the first half, it was 17-3.
Quarterback Luke Kromenhoek made his career debut and, on his second drive, led the Seminoles to a field goal that made it 17-6 with 1:49 left in the half.
Singleton Jr. started the second half with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The first points of his career cut the FSU deficit to just four, at 17-13.
Duke then was held to a field goal on its next possession, which made it 20-13. The next two Seminole drives, along with one Blue Devil drive, were three-and-outs.
As the fourth quarter began, Florida State was in the midst of what turned into a nine play, 56-yard drive. Capped by a Fitzgerald field goal with 11:35 left in the game it was again a four-point game at 20-16. FSU's drive was fueled by 17- and 14-yard runs by Glenn and a 19-yard pass from Glenn to Douglas.
The Blue Devils answered right back with a field goal of their own to extend their advantage back to seven at 23-16.
A fumble ended the next Florida State drive, and the defense forced Duke to punt with just under three minutes remaining. The Seminoles got to midfield on their final drive of the game. However, they couldn't convert a second fourth-down attempt and turned it over on downs with 53 seconds left.
FSU is on the road again next weekend, at Miami on October 26. Kickoff in Miami Gardens, Florida, is at 7 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.
