Ewin Leads Four In Double Figures, Seminoles Top UMass 92-59

UNCASVILLE, Conn.- Malique Ewin led four Seminoles in double figure scoring and Florida State defeated UMass, 92-59, in the final game of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off at the Mohegan Sun Arena.  Ewin scored his career-high of 17 points, Jamir Watkins scored 14, while Jerry Deng and Justin Thomas scored 10 points each. 

The Seminoles shot .569 from the field (33 of 58), .500 percent from the 3-point line (nine of 18) and made 17 free throws in scoring 92 points – their season high.

Defensively, the Seminoles limited the Minutemen to .310 shooting from the field (18 of 58) and .125 from the 3-point line (three of 24), earned seven steals, and four blocked shots.

Florida State led or was tied for all but 58 seconds of the game. After taking a 10-point lead into the locker room at halftime, the Seminoles outscored UMass by a 55-32 margin in the second half. Florida State shot .700 percent from the field (21-30) in the second half. 

Ewin enjoyed his third consecutive double figure scoring game and third consecutive in which he scored his career high for points in a game. He made seven of 10 field goal attempts, pulled down seven rebounds, and blocked one shot. 

Watkins enjoyed another outstanding performance with 14 points.  He was nearly perfect from the field as he made five of six field goal attempts.  Watkins also made two of three shots from outside the arc.

Watkins was chosen as the game's Most Valuable Player.

Florida State took control of the game as it closed the first half with a 24-3 run to take a 37-27 lead at the intermission. 

The Seminoles then outscored the Minutemen by a 15-4 margin in the first 4:38 of the second half to increase their lead to 21 points at the 15:22 mark (52-31). Florida State led by 30 (80-50) on a Watkins jumper at the 5:21 mark and had its largest lead of the game (36, 89-53) with just over three minutes remaining in the game.

Florida State utilized its bench as each of the 16 players on their roster earned playing time.  The Seminoles' bench players scored 41 of Florida State's season-high 92 points.

Justin Thomas scored 10 points as he was perfect from outside the arc on two 3-point shot attempts. Jerry Deng also added 10 points with two 3-point field goals made.   

The Seminoles totaled a season-high 25 assists on 33 baskets. Jackson led Florida State with a season-high six assists as 10 Seminoles recorded at least one assist. Bostyn Holt and Daquan Davis record four assists each while Deng added three assists.

Sophomore Taylor Bol Bowen scored seven points and led the Seminoles with two steals. Bowen led six Florida State players who earned at least one steal. Bol Bowen, Ewin, Holt and Deng each had one blocked shot.

The Seminoles return home Tuesday night to play host to Western Carolina in a game scheduled to begin at 7:00. The game was originally scheduled to be played as a neutral site game at the Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C. Florida State's administration worked with the Catamount's administration to move the game to the Donald L. Tucker Center and will play it as a home game for the Seminoles. Proceeds from the game will go to The MANNA FoodBank in Asheville, which lost its facility due to Hurricane Helene.
