WHY I WEAR MY NUMBER
I wear No. 25 at Florida State because of an ESPN 30 of 30 story I saw on a player named Benji Wilson. The show is about a young, tall, skinny kid who reminds me of myself who worked his way up and proved himself in basketball. As he rose to the top, he sadly lost his life due to gun violence. Soon after I watched the show, a person stepped into my life as a father-figure role who is from the same place, Chicago, as Benji Wilson. It felt like a sign. And, if you add a 2 in the front it becomes 225 which is the area code for my hometown Baton Rouge.
Justin Thomas is the 20th player in school history to wear uniform No. 25. Hugh Durham, a Florida State Hall of Famer as both a player and a coach, also wore the No. 25 during his career. As a player from 1956-59, Durham scored 1,281 points and averaged 18.9 points a game. As a coach, he led three teams to the NCAA Tournament, including the Seminoles’ 1971-72 squad that advanced to the national title game against John Wooden and the UCLA Bruins.
WHAT'S IN A NAME
Justin Thomas – My full name is Justin Clark Thomas. The name Justin is a name my mom liked. My mother chose the name Justin because she preferred I not be named after my father – Ben Thomas III – only because she didn’t want me to be Ben Thomas IV. My middle name – Clark -- honors my late grandmother whose maiden name was Clark. Clark is also the name of one of my uncles – Uncle Warren Clark Brown -- who passed away the same year I was born. A fun fact is that if I had been born a girl, my name would have been Summer after the song Summer Rain by Carl Thomas (no relation).
MY HOMETOWN
My hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana is one of the greatest cities in the world. Our food is world-class and people in the community are incredible. Once the community shows love, they show love forever.
