WHY I WEAR MY NUMBER
I wear No. 19 at Florida State. I wore No. 0 at Bishop O’Connell, at Oak Hill, and at DeMatha throughout my high school career. I connect with number 19 because Proverbs 19:21 from the Bible reminds me to approach my journey with faith and perseverance, trusting that God's purpose is guiding me through both the highs and lows.
AJ Swinton is the first player in school history to wear No. 19. Following a rule change to begin the 2023–24 season, the NCAA once again began allowing college basketball players to wear numbers 0–99 on their jerseys, including numbers 0 and 00. Previously, the NCAA had restricted two-digit jersey numbers that included the numbers 6, 7, 8, and 9.
WHAT'S IN A NAME
AJ Swinton – My full name is Alfred James Swinton. Alfred James holds a lot of meaning in my family. Alfred James was my grandfather’s name. There are other men in the family with James as their middle name, as well.
MY HOMETOWN
AJ Swinton -- My hometown of Cabin John, Maryland is only 20 minutes from downtown Washington, D.C. It’s a close-knit, culturally diverse community with a lot of history. It is also home to eight pro teams – the Washington Commanders (NFL), Washington Nationals (MLB), Washington Capitals (NHL), Washington Wizards (NBA), DC United (MLS), DC Defenders (UFL), Washington Spirit (NWSL) and the Washington Mystics (WNBA).
