Florida State Clinches Fifth Straight ACC Championship Appearance On Penalty Shootout

CARY, N.C. – The No. 6 Florida State soccer team used two incredible penalty kick saves from Addie Todd to knock out No. 3 Wake Forest and advance to the final of the 2024 Ally ACC Women's Championship. The Seminoles became the first team to advance to a fifth straight ACC title game in 15 years.
Both sides had quick spurts of chances out of the gate as Todd made an outstretched right leg save to deny the early Deacon chance while Marianyela Jiménez's shot whistled just wide. Freshman Solai Washington unleashed a lethal effort that forced the Wake Forest keeper into the diving save to keep the game level. Todd ended the first half with an instinctive save off a low driven free kick.
The opening of the second period saw the Seminoles take full control as Jordynn Dudley laid a pass off to Taylor Huff which she drove low and true into the back of the net to take the lead. Huff scored her 11th goal of the season and eclipsed the 30-point mark inside 20 games. Huff nearly doubled the advantage before the goal was correctly disallowed off an offsides call.
Wake Forest scored the equalizer inside the final 10 minutes to draw it level and nearly stole a lead if it weren't for Todd making an outrageous full extension to deny the winner. FSU was nearly awarded a penalty kick inside the final two minutes as Washington was challenged inside the box, after further review the penalty wasn't given and the first 90 minutes concluded.
Jiménez was denied at the near post off an inch-perfect cross before Dudley's shot was met with a save in the second overtime period. FSU dominated the 20 minutes of overtime with eight total shots while the Deacons recorded none. The game was to be decided on penalty kicks.
After both teams missed and scored one each, Todd made a low dive to her right to save the shot and gave the Seminoles a 2-1 lead after three penalties from each side. Washington blasted her penalty into the upper left corner to set up the game-winning moment. Todd read the penalty the whole way through, leaning left as the shot was taken and made another incredible outstretched save to send Florida State to the ACC championship game.
FSU has now won 11 straight games at the ACC Tournament. The Seminoles haven't lost a penalty shootout in the ACC Tournament since 2008 and have won all five occasions since.
Florida State will face No. 8 North Carolina in the 2024 ACC Championship game at WakeMed Soccer Park at noon on Sunday. The game will be available to watch on ESPNU.
