Watkins' 29 Lead Seminoles Over Tulane, 77-64, In Orange Bowl Classic

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Jamir Watkins scored a team-high 29 points, the Seminoles benefited from an early 29-4 run and defeated Tulane, 77-64, in the Orange Bowl Classic at the Amerant Bank Arena. Watkins drew 14 fouls and was 19 of 23 from the free throw line in reaching 29-point plateau for the second time this season. His 19 free throws made are a career-high and the fourth most made in a single game by a Florida State player.
Watkins also contributed five assists, four rebounds, and one steal in his standout performance. He was chosen as the MVP of the Seminoles' victory.
After surrendering the first six points of the game, Florida State scored13 consecutive points and led 13-6 at the 13:56 mark of the first half. The Seminoles' extended their lead to 24-10 at the 8:34 mark and to 34-17 at the 3:10 mark Florida State led 37-22 at halftime.
Watkins, 11 points, and junior Malique Ewin led the Seminoles with 10 points in the first half. Florida State made 11 of 21 field goals, shot .524 percent from the field and earned seven assists in the first 20 minutes of play. The Seminoles' defense limited Tulane to .286 shooting from the field and 22 points. Florida State caused nearly as many turnovers (seven) as it allowed baskets (eight) in the first half.
With 2:40 remaining in the first half, Watkins hit a free throw, bringing his total to double digits and pushing the score to 36-19.
Ewin added a strong effort with a team-high eight rebounds, along with 10 points, two assists, and one steal. He and Watkins have now scored in double figures in eight consecutive games
Jerry Deng scored his Florida State-high of 13 points, while adding two rebounds and two steals.
Daquan Davis recorded nine points, five rebounds, two steals, and a career high of five assists and Justin n Thomas contributed 10 points and two assists.
By the 5:14 mark in the second half, Watkins had already tallied 21 points after converting two more free throws, further solidifying his dominant performance.
Kaleb Banks led Tulane with 33 points and 16 rebounds. Rowan Brumbaugh was the only other Green Wave player who scored in double figures with 15 points.
The Seminoles play again back at the Civic Center after being on the road the past few days to face Winthrop University on Tuesday, December 17th, at 7:00 p.m.
