The Double Double-Double: A Rare, Special And Celebrated Occurance
12/20/2024 9:25:00 AM | Men's Basketball
TALLAHASSEE – It has happened only 188 times in the 2,238 games history of the Florida State men's basketball program. That's less than 8.5 percent of the total number of games played by the Seminoles since they defeated Spring Hill College on February 10, 1947 in the first game in the history of the program.
It's happened only 12 times in ACC play since Florida State joined the premier college basketball conference for the start of the 1991-92 season.
It's happened only 12 times since Leonard Hamilton became the head coach at Florida State in 2002.
It happened for the first time in nearly three years as the Seminoles defeated Winthrop, 84-62, on Tuesday night at the Donald L. Tucker Center.
It is a double double-double – a double-double by two different Florida State players.
Junior Malique Ewin scored 21 points and pulled down 15 rebounds and sophomore Taylor Bol Bowen scored 13 points and pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds. For Ewin it was his second career double-double following a 17-point and 17-rebound performance earlier this season at LSU during the ACC/SEC Challenge. For Bol Bowen it was his first career double-double and the first time he has recorded 10 or more rebounds during his career in the garnet and gold.
Florida State (9-3) plays host to Louisville (6-5) on Saturday, December 21, at 2:00 p.m. at the Tucker Center with a special appearance by Santa Cimarron, free tickets for Kids Club members, a special Kids Zone on the south concourse of the arena and garnet cups for the first 150 kids to arrive at the game.
General admission tickets for the Seminoles' game against the Cardinals start at only $10.
The dual double-doubles by Ewin and Bol Bowen marked the first time since January 21, 2021, that two Seminoles recorded double-doubles in the same game. The last time two Seminoles accomplished this feat in the same game when RaiQuan Gray (10 points and 11 rebounds) and Malik Osborne (11 points and 10 rebounds) totaled double-doubles in an 81-59 home win over Miami.
"It's hard to get 10 rebounds in a game," said Bol Bowen whose previous career-high for rebounds was seven which came earlier this season against Rice and Florida. "Rebounding is a mentality; it's something that coach Ham has been emphasizing a lot. He's working to get me to play more aggressively especially on the offensive end of the court."
Ewin, the Seminoles' leading rebounder with a career-high 7.7 rebounds per game average, agrees with Bol Bowen.
"What makes getting a double-double so difficult is going after every rebound, which has to be a mentality," said Ewin. "Fighting for every rebound is the hardest part of the equation. The way we run our offense points are going to come."
The school record for double-doubles in a game is four and that's happened four times in school history.
It happened against Biscayne College for the first time in 1970 and in a win over Miami in 1971. Reggie Royals (20 points and 17 rebounds), Vernell Ellzy (16 points and 15 rebounds), Rowland Garrett (10 points and 10 rebounds), and Otto Petty (15 points and 10 assists) helped the Seminoles' turn back Miami 114-106 in one of the highest scoring games in school history on January 8, 1971.
Four double-doubles also occurred in the same game as Florida State defeated Valdosta State, 134-65. In that game Ron Harris (20 points and 10 rebounds), Lawrence McCray (19 points and 16 rebounds), Reggie Royals (16 points and 11 rebounds) and Rowland Garrett (10 points and 12 rebounds) helped defeat the Blazers.
Later that same year, Harris, McCray, Royals and Garrett led Florida State to the championship game of the NCAA Tournament before the Seminoles fell to UCLA, 81-76, on college basketball's biggest stage.
Royals (24 points and 12 rebounds), McCray (22 points and 13 rebounds), Benny Clyde (18 points and 10 rebounds), and Petty (10 points and 10 assists) are the last group of four Seminoles to all register double-doubles in the same game in a 101-70 win over Georgetown on January 8, 1973.
The double-doubles by Ewin and Bol Bowen certainly grabbed Hamilton's attention during the Seminoles' victory over Winthrop.
"Obviously, we showed some improvement in the rebounding area," said Hamilton. "We haven't had many games where two guys get 28 rebounds. That shows that they are making more of a commitment to themselves, and they are holding themselves accountable for an area that we have not been very strong in. It's a different mindset, it's a shift, and I was glad to see the effort. We had everybody involved in rebounds. It shows that our guys are finally understanding that in order for us to be a better basketball team we've got to do a better job rebounding."
According to Bol Bowen double-doubles are special.
"Double-doubles are hard to get; they are tough for any player to achieve," said Bol Bowen. "That's why they are celebrated."
Ewin realized early in his career that rebounds are hard to get and double-doubles are hard to come by.
"I feel that earning a double-double shows that I can rebound and that I want to rebound the basketball," said Ewin. "Getting 10 plus rebounds in any game helps our team. The points are going to come, rebounding is harder."
The task against Louisville the Seminoles is obvious. The most important goal is to win the game, gain their 10th win of the season before the holiday, and improve to 1-1 in ACC play.
The last time two players earned double-doubles in consecutive games was during the 1991-92 season (the Seminoles' first year in the ACC) against Georgia Tech (January 23, 1992) and NC State (January 25, 1992). Against Georgia Tech, Douglas Edwards (10 points and 11 rebounds) and Charlie Ward (11 points and 11 assists) accomplished the feat. Against NC State, Edwards (20 points and 10 rebounds) and Rodney Dobard (14 points and 11 rebounds) led the Seminoles. Florida State won both games – 83-79 over Georgia Tech and 98-76 over NC State.
The last time the same Seminoles both earned double-doubles in consecutive games were Tony Dawson and Tat Hunter in games against Memphis on February 20, 1988 and against Alabama State on February 24, 1988. Dawson (10 points and 11 rebounds) and Hunter (11 points and 12 rebounds) earned the doubles against Memphis. Dawson (27 points and 11 rebounds) and Hunter (14 points and 14 rebounds) pulled off the double double-double in a win over Alabama State.
If you are wondering, a double double-double has happened twice against Louisville – in during the 1974-75 and 1988-89 seasons.
