CORAL GABLES, Fla. –The No. 17 Florida State men's tennis team capped off the regular season with a 4-2 victory over in-state rivals Miami on Saturday afternoon. The Seminoles won their eighth road match of the season, marking the most for the team since 1984.
The day began with an enthralling doubles match with games exchanged back-and-forth across all three courts. Youcef Rihane and Loris Pourroy were able to pull away and take a 6-4 victory on Court 2 for their second ranked victory of the season. Jamie Connel and Alex Bulte finished the job on Court 3 to take the doubles point with the same scoreline as Court 2.
Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif were within reach of another doubles win, leading 5-4 at No. 1 before the match was left unfinished.
After Miami tied the match at 1-1 with a win on Court 2, Bulte played at Court 5 for the third time this season and took full charge with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 straight-sets victory. Soon after, Cornut-Chauvinc fought through a first-set tiebreaker and put the Seminoles within clinching distance after a 6-4 second set.
Connel dropped his match in three grueling sets but Rihane and Azariah Rusher were each determined to clinch the decisive fourth point. Rihane split the first two sets but dominated the early portion of the third and was up 5-2 while Rusher won a long 7-5 first set and found himself in a second-set tiebreaker.
Rihane's match finished first as he clinched the final point in a 6-3 third set while Rusher was left one point away from his fifth win of the season. Rihane has now won five straight singles matches.
Florida State finishes the regular season 17-7 and 7-5 in the ACC. The Seminoles will await Sunday's remaining results to determine their seeding in the ACC Men's Tennis Championships beginning next week.
