Seminoles Tame Tigers To Advance to Super Regionals

5/19/2024 9:39:00 PM | Softball

TALLAHASSEE – The 15th-seeded Florida State softball team (46-14) punched its ticket into Super Regionals with a 10-4 victory over Auburn (29-21-1) on Sunday night at the Seminole Softball Complex. The Seminoles advanced to the Super Regional round for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons and scored double-digit runs in the tournament for the first time since 2019.

The Tigers used a double and a couple of walks to load the bases before a two-run single scored the first runs of the game in the second inning. FSU responded in the next frame with a Jaysoni Beachum walk and a single up the middle by Isa Torres to put the freshmen at the corners.

Michaela Edenfield stepped up to the plate and crushed a 3-1 ball directly over center field for her first home run of the tournament and second three-run homer of the month. Edenfield smacked her 15th home run of the season to become the co-home run leader this season with Beachum. It was her 43rd home run of her career which moved her to fourth on the all-time home run list with Sydney Sherrill.

Auburn was able to tie the game off a single through the infield in the bottom of the fifth and loaded the bases with two outs. A deflection off Ashtyn Danley's glove looked to spell trouble before Torres made a timely adjustment to make the crucial throw to first to keep the game tied at 3-3.

The Seminoles loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. Auburn's pitching change saw Maddie Penta enter the game and strike out the first two batters. Kaley Mudge held her own with two outs and took a five pitch walk to take the lead back. Beachum snuck a single to the shortstop to score an additional run before Kalei Harding scored a two-run single for a four-run lead.

The bats were hot and the breakout was punctuated emphatically when Torres sent the crowd into full rupture and sent a rocket over center field for the second three-run homer of the night for a 10-3 lead.

The Seminoles finished the regional round with a 3-0 record for only the eighth time in program history in the Super Regional era. FSU will travel to Oklahoma for the Norman Super Regional in a rematch of last year's national championship. The series will begin on Thursday at 7 p.m. eastern on ESPN2. Friday's game will be at 8 p.m. with TV information TBD.
