TALLAHASSEE - Head Coach Lonni Alameda and the Florida State softball team picked up their first transfer portal addition on Thursday as left-handed pitcher Julia Apsel signed with the Noles.Â
Â
A Second Team All-Northeast Region selection, Apsel took the reins in 2024 and became the ace inside the circle for Hofstra. Apsel made 33 appearances in the circle for the Pride including 31 starts as she pitched a team-high 201.2 innings. Apsel posted a 1.39 ERA and a 19-12 record for the Pride. In 31 starts, Apsel went the distance in 20 of those starts. Her 20 complete games ranked 15th in the country. The Second Team All-CAA selection's 1.39 ERA was ranked 10th in the entire country and her 176 strikeouts was ranked 37th in the country.Â
Â
Apsel performed phenomenally against Power Five opponents this season. Against the NCAA Tournament qualifying Penn State Nittany Lions, Apsel threw 6.1 innings and allowed just two earned runs on seven hits while striking out three. Against the National Runner-Up Texas Longhorns, Apsel pitched 6.0 innings and allowed just four runs to one of the nation's top offenses. Apsel and the Pride were one of just two non-Power Five teams to hold Texas to five runs or less this season and was one of three unranked teams to hold the Longhorns to under five runs this season.Â
Â
Maybe Apsel's most impressive performance of the 2024 season came against Missouri who entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 7 overall seed and was one win away from the Women's College world Series. Apsel shut down the Tigers as she pitched all nine innings of the thriller and allowed just two runs on four hits to the Tigers while striking out six.Â
Â
Apsel earned CAA All-Tournament Team honors as she started every game in the CAA Conference Tournament for the Pride. In four games, Apsel pitched 26.2 innings and allowed just three earned runs while recording 24 strikeouts. In her final 12 appearances of 2024, Apsel allowed just 11 earned runs in 73.2 innings.Â
Â
Apsel will join a pitching staff that continued to improve as the 2024 season went on. Apsel will join Second Team All-ACC selection Ashtyn Danley, 2023 Second-Team All-ACC selection Makenna Reid and Mimi Gooden who came on strong for the Seminoles at the end of the season. The Seminoles will also be bringing in Jasmine "Jazzy" Francik as a part of its 2024 class. Francik was the 2022 Florida Gatorade Player of the Year and has posted a 0.40 ERA with over 1,500 strikeouts as a six-year varsity player for Melbourne High School.Â
