PARIS – Morgane Metraux, who earned All-American honors as a Florida State golfer in 2017 and 2018, begins play Wednesday in the 2024 Paris Olympics Women's Golf Championship at Le Golf National in Paris. The Seminole great is representing her home country of Switzerland in her first Olympic appearance, following her graduation from Florida State University with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 2018.
The Seminole alumnus will compete at Le Golf National in Guyancourt, a course which is just outside of Paris, from Aug. 7-10. The Olympic tournament will consist of four 18-hole stroke-play rounds with the Top-3 finishers in the 60-player field awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.
Metraux tees off at Wednesday at 5:06 a.m. (local time) and is playing with Azahara Munoz (Spain) and Bianca Pagdanganan (Philippines) in the first round.
"It's really cool to play in the Olympics and represent Switzerland," Metraux told Seminoles.com. "I qualified to go to Tokyo, but unfortunately I had to the invitation down because of my chances of getting my LPGA card on Symetra (Tour) at the time. I was really happy that I was able to qualify again and actually be here this time."
Metraux qualified as one of two representatives from Switzerland through the Official World Golf rankings (OWGR). The field at the women's golf competition for the Olympic Games in Paris was selected through the OWGR in which she is currently ranked 37th.
"I'm really excited," said Metraux. "We don't play for our country very much. I think in professional golf the only really patriotic thing is the Solheim Cup, which I have not been a part of yet. It's really cool to be able to have this opportunity."
Metraux is the third Florida State women's golfer to play in the Olympic Games. Matilda Castren and Kim Metraux (Morgane's older sister) – made Florida State history as they played in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Seminole pair became the first two golfers in the history of the Seminole program to play in the Olympics. Castren, who finished in a tie for 10th place, represented her home country of Finland. Kim Metraux represented her home country of Switzerland and finished in 54th place.
"I'm looking forward to the whole experience of it all – discovering the village and seeing the athletes," said Metraux, who spent two nights in the Olympic Athletes Village. "It's so different from a normal tournament. Obviously when we are at the course it's more similar but everything around it is a really cool experience. I'm just going to try and enjoy it as much as I can. It's just really cool to be a part of the Olympics and see what I can see."
Metraux quickly got a feel for the Olympic Village.
"It's cool to be amongst all the other athletes," said Metraux. "To just walk around, see them just being themselves and not in their sports, just doing their own thing makes for a really, really cool atmosphere."
The 28-year-old Metraux currently plays on the LPGA and Ladies European Tours. In 2021, she won the Island Resort Championship on the Symetra Tour which helped her gain LPGA Tour status. She won the 2022 Ladies Italian Open in 2022 and the Jabra Ladies Open in France in 2024.
"I think the Olympics is becoming more and more of a thing in golf. I think the more forward we go with it, the more of a bigger opportunity and goal it will be. So, yes, it's definitely a big thing for me. I think whenever you're seeing anybody with your team's clothes, they go and say hello and say good luck. It's more like a team building aspect where everybody is supporting you within your country. I think that's a really, really cool thing."
During her career as a Seminole, she earned All-America honors during her junior and senior seasons.
Golf Channel will air the 2024 Women's Olympic Golf event on TV.
