Florida State Begins 2025 Season in Hawaii

1/3/2025 1:00:00 PM | Men's Tennis

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida State men's tennis team will begin its 78th season in the Hawaiian islands at Hawaii on Sunday. The Seminoles kickoff the collegiate tennis season as the first match on the calendar.

Florida State will face Hawaii at 1 p.m. ET at the UH Tennis Complex. FSU has won all five previous matches over the Rainbow Warriors. The last match between both sides saw Loris Pourroy clinch the winning point off a second-set tiebreaker while Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc overcame a set deficit to knock off a top-50 opponent in 2023. FSU has swept Hawaii in the past three matches and has won 23 consecutive season opening matches dating back to 2002.

The Seminoles finished the season with its highest ITA ranking in program history as the No. 10 team in the nation. Florida State achieved its first-ever ACC Championship after claiming four consecutive ranked victories in four days, becoming the lowest seed to ever win the conference title.

FSU returns six of its nine players from last season including four senior starters in the ACC Championship match, Jamie Connel, Youcef Rihane, Alex Bulte, and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif. Underclassmen Azariah Rusher and Justin Lyons return for their sophomore seasons.

The Seminoles added two premier transfers with Corey Craig returning to his home state after two years at Boston University while German sophomore Erik Schiessl comes in after a season at Oklahoma State. FSU brings in two European freshman players in Swiss native Jan Sebesta and Austrian native Elias Sumann. Sebesta was ranked as the preseason No. 10 newcomer in the nation.

Head coach Dwayne Hultquist begins his 26th season at the helm of the program, accumulating over 600 career wins for the Seminoles. Last season, he claimed the program's first ACC title and was named the ACC Coach of the Year for the first time since 2018. Sudanwa Sitaram returns for a second season as assistant coach.

Live video and stats from Sunday's match will be available on Seminoles.com.
