Seminoles Rally to Defeat Virginia in Four Sets

10/24/2025 9:28:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida State volleyball team (10-8, 4-5) returned to the friendly confines of Tully Gym and defeated Virginia (10-8, 3-6) in four sets (21-25, 25-19, 25-14) on Friday night.

The Noles had its best offensive output since Sept. 28 as the Noles hit . 324 on the night led by Iane Henke and Kyleene Filimaua. Henke had 21 kills while hitting .297 and Filimaua had 19 kills while hitting .378. Both Henke and Filimaua recorded double-digit digs to earn double doubles for the Noles. Henke has now recorded 20 or more kills in her last four matches.

The Cavaliers were the ones to get off to a hot start as they led from start to finish to take the first set 25-19.

The Noles responded in a big way thanks to a phenomenal performance behind the service line. The Noles jumped out to a 14-9 lead, but the Cavaliers climbed back to cut the lead to two at 18-16. The teams traded points until Mio Yamamoto recorded three-consecutive aces to end the set and tie the match. Yamamoto had four aces in the set while Nellie Stevenson added one.

It was the Garnet and Gold from start to finish in set three as they took the set 25-14. The red-hot Noles hit .500 in the set including six kills from both Henke and Filimaua.

Set four was the tightest of them all. The Noles got a little separation at 11-8 thanks to a pair of kills from Filimaua and Lexie Mason. Virginia would not go away though as they eventually were the first team to 20 at 20-19. The Noles got a couple of kills from Lily Nicholson and Henke to take a 22-21 lead, and Yamamoto recorded her sixth ace of the match in a clutch moment to put the Noles up two. Yamamoto continued to apply the service pressure as her serve forced a bad set from the Cavaliers and an overpass on set point that Henke put down to give the Noles the match.

Yamamoto's six aces were a career high and was tied for the third-most by any Seminole against an ACC opponent.

FSU will be back in action Sunday for the annual Paint It Pink match against Virginia Tech. First serve is set for 1 p.m. on ACCNX.
