Seminoles Reach NCAA Third Round with Shutout of Lipscomb

11/20/2025 6:11:00 PM | Women's Soccer

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 3-seeded Florida State soccer team defeated Lipscomb 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament Second Round on Thursday afternoon at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C.

FSU advances to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament for the 22nd time in program history and the seventh time in the last eight years. Florida State improves to 85-19-6 all-time in NCAA play and 22-2-1 in the Second Round with Thursday's win.

The Seminoles (12-2-4) registered their 11th clean sheet of the season while halting the Bisons' (15-6-2) four-game win streak. FSU became the first team to score on LU in five games, as Lipscomb looked for a second consecutive upset in this year's NCAA Tournament.

Senior defender Heather Gilchrist netted the game-winning goal in the 24th minute on a corner kick assist from sophomore midfielder Taylor Suarez. The score that went on to keep Florida State's season alive is Gilchrist's fifth career goal and fourth of the season. It is her third game-winner.

Florida State controlled the pace offensively, posting 20 shots to Lipscomb's four, with a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. FSU took seven corner kicks to LU's one. Freshman goalkeeper Kate Ockene registered her third consecutive complete game shutout with one save. The Bisons' keeper made five saves. Junior forward Jordynn Dudley had five shots and two shots on goal, both game highs.

The first shot of the afternoon was from freshman forward Nyanya Touray, who made her first start of the season against the Bisons. The attempt on the edge of the goal box narrowly sailed over the crossbar. Another chance would come soon after from sophomore forward Wrianna Hudson, whose attempt rolled just inches wide of the right goalpost.

Gilchrist netted the game's only goal at 23:22. A corner kick by Suarez near the goal line was deflected by the Lipscomb keeper, but Gilchrist was right there to get the rebound and put it into the top-left corner of the net. The score is Gilchrist's first career postseason goal. Suarez, who also assisted on the game-winning goal in last week's First Round win, earned her seventh assist of the season.

The ball primarily stayed in Florida State's offensive side of the pitch, as Dudley and Hudson forced saves from the LU goalkeeper on back-to-back attempts in the 26th minute. The final shot on goal came from sophomore midfielder Lara Dantas in the 44th minute, but a diving save kept the Seminoles from extending their lead.

Florida State outshot Lipscomb 12-1 with a 4-1 edge on frame in the first half. Hudson and Dudley led with three shots each, while Gilchrist and Touray both accounted for two. FSU took four corner kicks and held LU to zero. Ockene registered one save to her Bisons counterpart's three.

The second half started with several good chances the Seminoles offense, with four shots in the first five minutes of play. The first shot on goal of the half came from Suarez just over two minutes in, charging up field and firing a shot from the edge of the goal box that was snagged by the Bisons keeper.

Another chance on frame would come from Dudley in the 67th minute. A backwards header trailing towards the bottom right of the goal line would be scooped up just in time by Lipscomb.

LU had a chance late to tie it up, but the FSU defense preserved the shutout. That included a shot forced wide in the final 20 seconds and a last-second corner kick that was taken as the clock expired.

Florida State bested Lipscomb 8-3 in shots through the final 45 minutes, registering two on goal to Lipscomb's zero. The Seminoles had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks in the second half. Ockene faced no shots on goal in the second half and LU's keeper made two more saves.

Remaining at Shaw Field, Florida State will face the winner of tonight's matchup between No. 2-seed and host Georgetown and No. 7-seeded West Virginia. The Third Round game is set for Sunday, November 23 at 12 p.m. ET.
