Somerville’s 23 Points Lead Seminoles Over Jacksonville, 87-63

TALLAHASSEE – Martin Somerville scored a season-high 23 points, and Chauncey Wiggins added 16 in Florida State's 87-63 win over the Jacksonville University Dolphins at the Donald L. Tucker Center. Robert McCray V finished with 10 assists, marking the fourth time he recorded double-digit assists this season. He is the only Florida State player in school history to record double-digit assists four times in one season, and is the only player in school history to record 10 or more assists four times over their career.
Florida State improved to 7-6, and Jacksonville fell to 5-8. Florida State has won two consecutive and seven games at home this season.
Somerville's 23 points marked the first time he has led the team in scoring this season. Wiggins, Alex Steen (11 points), Lajae Jones (10 points), and Thomas Bassong (10 points) all finished in double figure scoring.
Florida State made 11 3-point shots, with Somerville recording a season-high five made 3-point shots. He has made at least one 3-point shot in every game this season and has extended his 3-point making streak to 42 games. Somerville also finished with a season-high eight free throws. He was a perfect eight of eight from the free throw line.
The Seminoles outrebounded Jacksonville 44-28, marking the fifth consecutive game they have outrebounded their opponent. The Seminoles grabbed 16 offensive rebounds. Steen led the team with a game-high four offensive boards. Steen is the ACC leader in offensive rebounds.
McCray V opened the scoring for the Seminoles with a made 3-point shot.
Florida State jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, and thanks to back-to-back 3-point shots from Wiggins and Cam Miles opened an early 12-5 lead.
After two made free throws by Jacksonville, Florida State would go on a 15-2 run to extend their lead to 20 at 27-7. Somerville (10) and Basong (four) combined for fourteen of the Seminoles' 15 points over that span.
Florida State led 27-12 with 7:03 left to play in the first half.
Over the next seven minutes, the Seminoles outscored Jacksonville 16-9 and ended the first half on a 6-0 run on made 3-point shots from Wiggins and Lajae Jones.
Florida State led the Dolphins 43-21 heading into halftime.
Steen opened the second half with a made layup coming off an assist from McCray V.
Florida State scored 44 points in the second half. The Seminoles made three 3-point shots and 11 of their 12 free throw attempts in the second half.
The Seminoles controlled the paint as they scored 28 points in the paint total. Florida State scored 18 of its points in the paint in the second half.
Bassong finished the game with 10 points and a career-high eight rebounds. He has scored double-digits in consecutive games for the first time in his collegiate career.
Jones also finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and one steal. Jones has scored double-digit points eight times this season.
Florida State travels to Chapel Hill to take on the University of North Carolina at the Dean E. Smith Center on Tuesday, December 30, at 7:00 p.m.
