CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Chauncey Wiggins scored a team-high 16 and recorded his second career double-double with 10 rebounds in Florida State's 79-66 loss against N. 12/12 North Carolina at the Dean E. Smith Center. Wiggins' double-double is his first career double-double in an ACC game. His 16 points tied his ACC career high in scoring, and he previously scored 16 points against Virginia Tech on January 25, 2025. His 10 rebounds tie his season-high, which he set against Georgia Southern on November 21 earlier this season, and broke his ACC single-game rebound record, which was eight. Robert McCray V's eight assists mark 100 assists this season, and he has reached that mark for the second time in his career (recorded 143 last season). McCray V (11), Lajae Jones (10), and Kobe MaGee (12) also finished with double-digit points.
Florida State fell to 7-7 and 0-1 in the ACC. North Carolina improved to 13-1 and 1-0 in ACC play.
Wiggins has now led the team in scoring four times this season and has scored double-figures in three consecutive games. McCray V led the team in assists for the sixth consecutive game and for the 12th time this season.
McCray V opened the scoring with a floater in the lane to put Florida State up early.
North Carolina led 13-7 with 12:10 left to play in the first half.
MaGee made a 3-point shot, and Wiggins scored a layup from a pass by Martin Somerville to cut the lead to one, 13-12, with 11:27 remaining in the half.
All four of MaGee's field goals came from behind the arc. He has now made four 3-point shots four times this season.
The Tar Heels extended their lead to six, 18-12, at the 10:56 mark. MaGee's second made 3-point shot of the game, and two made free throws from Alex Steen brought the Seminoles within one, 18-17.
The Seminoles trailed 39-28 with just over two minutes left in the first half. Florida State outscored the Tar Heels 6-1 during the last two minutes heading into intermission.
The Seminoles scored their final nine points of the half from behind the arc.
Somerville made both of his 3-point field goals in the first half. He has made at least one 3-point shot in every game this season. He has made multiple 3-point shots in 10 of Florida State's 13 games this season. Somerville has made a 3-point shot in 42 consecutive games and in 45 of 46 games in his career.
North Carolina led Florida State 40-34 after one half of play.
Through the first three minutes of the second half, Florida State outscored UNC 9-4, including a 7-0 run to cut the UNC lead to one once again with 16:20 to go in the game. Jones scored five consecutive points over that run.
The Seminoles trailed 44-43 before and 18-3 North Carolina run over the next six minutes. That spurt gave the Tar Heels a 62-46 lead. The 16-point lead tied the Tar Heels' largest lead of the game.
The Seminoles would later go on a quick 6-0 run to cut the lead to 10 at 62-52 with 7:46 remaining in the game.
UNC led 71-59 with just under three minutes in the game before McCray V scored a second-chance jumper to bring the Tar Heel lead back to 10 with 2:17 to go.
UNC outscored the Seminoles 8-6 over the last two minutes to close out the game.
Florida State returns to the Tucker Center on Saturday, January 3, to take on the Duke Blue Devils at 3:45 p.m.
