Seminoles Post Opening Day Shutout

2/14/2025 9:39:00 PM | Baseball

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 9 Florida State baseball team began the 2025 season with a 6-0 victory over James Madison in front of a sellout crowd at Dick Howser Stadium on Friday night.

Junior left-handed starter Jamie Arnold made his first career Opening Day start and allowed just one hit in 6.0 shutout innings with eight strikeouts, while junior second baseman Drew Faurot hit a three-run home run in the third inning to provide all the offense FSU needed.

With 6,700 fans in attendance on a beautiful evening, the Seminoles (1-0) scored six runs on four hits with one error. The Dukes (0-1) were held to two hits and committed five errors. Five of FSU's six runs were unearned.

Florida State posted its fourth consecutive Opening Day win and improved to 66-10-1 all-time in its first game of the season. Three of FSU's last four season-opening victories have come against JMU, with 2025 joining 2022 and 2023, all in Tallahassee. The Seminoles are 6-0 on the opening weekend under third-year head coach Link Jarrett, with Opening Day shutouts in each of the last two campaigns.

In 6.0 innings of work, Arnold allowed just one hit, in the fifth inning, and struck out eight with no walks. Sophomore righty John Abraham followed with 3.0 shutout innings of his own to pick up his second career save. He also limited JMU to one hit, in the ninth, and struck out eight, including the first six batters he faced and the last two. Abraham walked one.

Faurot's three-run home run turned a scoreless game into a 3-0 Florida State lead in the third inning. The 23rd homer of his career and eighth at FSU came on a 3-2 pitch with two outs. It was the highlight of a two-hit night for the junior.

The Seminoles improved to 7-0 all-time against James Madison, to go along with three-game home sweeps in 2022 and 2023, also to open those seasons. Tonight was the first shutout.

Arnold struck out a pair in a 1-2-3 first inning, and he retired the side again in the second. He added his third strikeout in a clean third inning, with several nice defensive plays by Seminole infielders helping the Dukes go nine up, nine down.

Offensively, Florida State put two on in the first, on an error and a walk, and they loaded the bases thanks to another error and a Faurot single in the second. They couldn't plate a run until the third, when a fielding error and walk put two on with one out. A strikeout was the second out of the inning to set up Faurot.

On a 3-2 pitch, he hit the season's first home run with a deep ball over the right-center field wall. That gave FSU a 3-0 lead, which proved to be enough with Arnold, and then Abraham, on the mound.

Two more strikeouts fueled another perfect inning for Arnold in the fourth, and he got the first two outs of the fifth. A single to shallow left was the first hit of the game, but the southpaw quickly induced a grounder that he fielded and threw to first to end the threat.

Arnold's night concluded after the sixth inning, a frame that saw a runner reach on an error and steal second. That's the only James Madison runner that got into scoring position, and Arnold struck out his eighth, and second of the inning, to conclude his night.

Abraham picked up right where Arnold left off with three strikeouts in the seventh and three more in the eighth.

Florida State added three runs in the bottom of the eighth to double its lead. Redshirt senior catcher Nathan Cmeyla led off the frame with a double down the left field line and took third on a wild pitch. Freshman first baseman Myles Bailey and junior right fielder Gage Harrelson both walked to load the bases with no outs. Junior shortstop Alex Lodise then lined out on a hard-hit ball to short. Attempting to double off Bailey at second, the errant throw went into right field to allow Cmeyla and Bailey to score.

A fielder's choice plated Harrelson, as junior center fielder Max Williams drove him in.

Abraham completed the three-inning save with two strikeouts to end the ninth. The leadoff batter reached on a single to left but was thrown out at second by Williams to Faurot. A walk put one on before the two punchouts ended it.

The Seminoles and Dukes continue their three-game series on Saturday, February 15, with first pitch at Dick Howser Stadium at 2 p.m. ET. The series finale is set for Sunday at 12 p.m.
