FSU Run-Rules Penn

2/21/2025 10:10:00 PM | Baseball

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 9 Florida State baseball team run-ruled Penn 24-2 in seven innings on Friday at Dick Howser Stadium.

On a chilly but cloudless evening, the Seminoles (5-0) scored 24 runs on 20 hits and sent nine or more batters to the plate in four of their six innings at-bat. They scored five runs in the first, second and fifth innings and seven in the sixth. Meanwhile, FSU held the Quakers (0-1) to two unearned runs, in the sixth inning, on four hits.

Eleven players had at least one hit and six had two or more. Eleven had one or more RBI and five recorded at least two. Twelve players scored one or more runs, with seven crossing home plate multiple times. All nine starters had a hit and at least an RBI or a run scored, with six of them notching all three. Five starters, and six players total, had multiple hits and either one or more RBI or run scored, with three having multiple hits, RBI and runs scored.

Nineteen of Florida State's 20 hits were singles.

FSU scored 20 or more runs for the first time this season and plated 24 for the first time since last season's 24-4 NCAA Super Regional victory over UConn. The 22-run margin of victory is the team's best since a 24-1 triumph over USF on March 3, 2015.

Junior second baseman Drew Faurot continued his hot start to the season with three hits, five RBI and three runs scored, all career-high-tying totals. He hit his team-leading third home run of the season, a four-run shot in the fourth inning. Junior right fielder Gage Harrelson had a collegiate-best-tying four hits, an RBI and three runs scored in the leadoff spot, while redshirt senior catcher Nathan Cmeyla notched two hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore third baseman Cal Fisher had two hits, four RBI and two runs and junior catcher Jaxson West scored three runs on two hits with an RBI. Off the bench, freshman Jace Estes had two hits and two RBI, both the firsts of his career.

On the mound, Florida State held the opposition without an earned run for the third time in five games in 2025. Junior left-hander Jamie Arnold got the start and gave up two hits with eight strikeouts in 5.0 shutout innings. He improved to 2-0 on the year. Junior righty Nick Greaney and redshirt junior lefty Jacob Marlowe both made their FSU debuts in relief. Greaney did not allow a hit in 0.2 innings and Marlowe pitched the final 1.1 and struck out two without allowing a run.

FSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, as Fisher drove in two, and he scored on a fielder's choice. Freshman first baseman Myles Bailey brought home Faurot with a two-out base hit, and Meyla scored on sophomore left fielder Chase Williams' infield single.

The lead doubled in the second with another five-run frame. Fisher singled in the first run and West brought in the next. Cmeyla drove home a pair before Faurot scored on a fielder's choice to make it 10-0 with no outs.

Singles by Faurot and Cmeyla made it 12-0 after three.

The scoring in the fourth inning started with an RBI groundout to plate Harrelson, and a passed ball brought in another before Faurot homered to right. The three-run shot with one out made it 17-0.

Florida State's first 13 runs all came without an extra-base hit and the first 10 scored without the help of an error.

Penn had a single in the first and a double in the second, but then Arnold retired the next 12 batters he faced, with 1-2-3 innings in the third fourth and fifth to cap his night.

The Quakers got on the board with a pair of two-out, unearned runs in the sixth inning. The Seminoles responded with seven in the bottom half, with a bases-loaded RBI single by redshirt freshman Brody DeLamielleure getting it started, followed by a run-scoring single from Harrelson. A walk, a hit batter and a wild pitch scored three more before Estes singled up the middle to plate the final two.

Marlowe struck out two in the seventh to secure the run-rule win.

The series continues with game two on Saturday at 2 p.m. The finale is on Sunday, with first pitch now at 1 p.m.
