Carns’ Career Day Helps Lift No. 9 FSU

2/22/2025 6:36:00 PM | Baseball

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Another balanced offensive attack and strong defense helped the No. 9 Florida State baseball team to a 9-3 victory over Penn on Saturday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium.

FSU has won six in a row to start the season, a feat it has achieved in all three years under head coach Link Jarrett. It's the first time the Seminoles have won six or more consecutively to open a season three years in a row since a five-year run from 2007-2011.

Saturday's win was fueled by freshman catcher Hunter Carns, who had a career day with four hits, his first collegiate home run and four runs scored.

As they have done every game this season, the Seminoles (6-0) jumped out to an early lead. Florida State scored two in the first, three in the second, one in the fourth, another two in the sixth and one more in the eighth. The Quakers (0-2) scored single runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings.

FSU plated its nine runs on 11 hits and Penn's three runs came on nine hits. Florida State was 6-15 (.400) with runners on and 3-10 (.300) with runners in scoring position while stranding five runners. The Quakers stranded 13 and were 4-20 (.200) with runners on base and 1-10 (.100) with runners in scoring position.

Florida State was victorious on a sun-filled afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of 6,700 fans, the third capacity crowd in the first five games at Dick Howser Stadium in 2025.

Along with Carns' 4-4 day, junior shortstop Alex Lodise had another two hits and two RBI with a home run and junior right fielder Gage Harrelson had four RBI with the help of a bases-loaded, three-RBI triple.

On the mound, redshirt junior Joey Volini improved to 2-0 on the season. In 5.2 innings, he allowed two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk. The bullpen followed him and held Penn to one more run on three hits with three strikeouts in the final 3.1 innings.

Florida State scored multiple runs in the first inning for the second time in as many days, with two in the first on Saturday thanks to Lodise's second home run of the campaign. The two-run shot to right-center came with no outs and scored Harrelson.

Penn got a run back in the top of the third on an infield single, but Volini got back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.

The Seminoles answered right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second thanks to a three-run, bases-clearing triple by junior right fielder Gage Harrelson. Hit down the left-field line, it scored Carns, freshman first baseman Myles Bailey and sophomore left fielder Chase Williams.

That made it 5-1 before both teams scored one in the fourth. A two-out homer in the top half was followed by Carns' leadoff home run in the bottom. The blast bounced off the scoreboard in left field as FSU made it 6-2.

Meanwhile, Volini stranded one runner on in each of the first five innings except the third, where a leaping catch on a lineout by Bailey left the bases loaded.  Volini got the first two outs of the sixth before sophomore righty John Abraham relieved him and used a strikeout to end the frame.

FSU then added to its advantage in the bottom of the sixth, as a double-play groundout brought home junior second baseman Drew Faurot, and an error scored Carns.

A leadoff home run in the top of the seventh made it 8-3, and sophomore right-hander Peyton Prescott came in to get the final out with a lineout to leave the bases full. He followed with a scoreless eighth.

The Seminoles tacked on one insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Harrelson that scored Carns.

With a 9-3 lead in the ninth, redshirt senior Joe Charles made his season debut and got a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

The series finale is on Sunday, with first pitch now at 1 p.m. Tickets are available for Sunday's game at Seminoles.com/Tickets or by calling the FSU ticket office at 850-644-1830. Admission is free for all FSU students with their I.D. The student entrance is at the right field gate at Haggard Plaza.

On Sunday there is a koozie giveaway for early-arriving fans. At every Sunday regular-season home game in 2025, Kids Club members and youth wearing their little league jerseys will be admitted free, and kids 12 and under will be allowed to run the bases postgame, sponsored by Campus USA.
