BERKELEY, California - The No. 9 Florida State softball (38-6, 12-1) cruised past the the Cal Bears (27-12, 6-7), 8-1, on Friday evening. Friday marked Coach Lonni Alameda's 800th win at FSU.
After a scoreless first inning, Michaela Edenfield launched her 51st career home run over the scoreboard to put the Noles up 1-0. Back-to-back singles from Angelee Bueno and Kennedy Harp put runners in scoring position. Everyone was safe on a fielder's choice to load the bases for Isa Torres who hit a flyball deep enough to score Harp to extend the lead to two.
A couple of walks and an error loaded the bases for the Noles in the third, and Shelby McKenzie hit one up the middle to put another run on the board for the Noles.
Back-to-back infield singles from Ashtyn Danley and Torres put runners in scoring position for Jahni Kerr who stayed hot with a single off the right field wall to put the Noles up 4-0.
Danley got the start in the circle for the Noles and was terrific throwing three scoreless innings. The Bears got one unearned run back in the bottom of the fourth. Annabelle Widra came on in the top of the fifth and threw 2.2 scoreless innings to earn the save. Danley improved to 9-1 in the circle this season.
Kerr added some insurance in the top of the sixth with her fifth home run of the season to put the Noles up 6-1. FSU added two more runs in the seventh on a passed ball and a wild pitch.
Game two of the series is set for 5 p.m. tomorrow on ACCNX.
