Florida State sits in sixth out of 18 teams after round one Friday
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Junior Alexandra Gazzoli carded a two-under-par 70 to lead No. 17 Florida State women's golf to a sixth place standing after the opening round of the Landfall Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall's Pete Dye Course on Friday.
Â
The Seminoles finished the first round at seven-over-par 295 in a competitive 18-team field that includes 15 teams ranked among the nation's top 50. Florida State sits ahead of several nationally ranked programs as it begins its final tournament of the fall season.
Â
Gazzoli matched her season-low round with four birdies and consistent play on both nines, shooting a 35 on the front and back to finish at two-under. Of the 96 golfers, Gazzoli was one of only nine to finish in the red. Her round placed her in a tie for fifth individually.
Â
Louise Landgraf, Haruhi Nakatani, and Sophia Fullbrook each carded three-over-par rounds of 75 for the Seminoles. Their scores matched the tournament field's average of 75.41 on a challenging par-72 layout where birdies were difficult to find.
Â
No. 6 Duke was the only team to finish under par, posting a two-under-par total to take the first-round lead. No. 19 Alabama is two shots back at even par, while top-ranked Wake Forest sits in third at two-over.
Â
Florida State will be paired with Duke and Clemson again in round two. They will begin on hole 10 starting at 9:18 a.m. ET.
