McCray’s 27 Leads Seminoles’ 80-72 Comeback Victory Over Boston College

TALLAHASSEE – Florida State outscored Boston College 17-5 in the final 4:36 to erase a 14-point deficit and defeat the Eagles by an 80-72 margin at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The Seminoles trailed the Eagles by a 68-63 score with 4:51 remaining to play and held the visitors to two field goals the rest of the way to gain their sixth ACC win in their last eight games. Florida State trailed by 14 points in the first half and took the lead for good on a 3-point shot by Chauncey Wiggins with 1:49 remaining in the game.

Florida State improved to 13-13 and 6-7 in the ACC. Boston College fell to 9-17 and 2-11 in ACC play.

Robert McCray V led the Seminoles with 27 points to lead four Seminoles in double-figure scoring. Alex Steen totaled 13 points (on seven of eight shooting from the free throw line), Wiggins totaled 11 (on three made 3-point shots), and Lajae Jones scored 10 (on six of seven made free throws).

Jones (nine rebounds) and Steen (eight rebounds) came within one and two rebounds, respectively, of earning double-doubles in the victory.

McCray V added six rebounds and a team-high five assists. He has led the Seminoles in assists in 22 games this season.

Florida State outscored the Eagles 48-30 in the second half. The Seminoles shot .619 percent from the field and a blazing .600 percent (six of 10) from behind the arc to grab a come-from-behind victory. Florida State made a season-high 27 free throws.

In the second half, the Seminoles attacked the glass outrebounding the Eagles 20-12. Florida State scored nine second-chance points in the second half.

Florida State held an 8-5 lead with 16:49 left to play in the first half. The Eagles responded with a 13-0 run to take a 21-8 lead with 11:37 remaining before halftime.

The Seminoles cut the lead to seven, 24-17, with just over nine minutes to go in the first half. The Eagles, though, extended their lead back to double digits to take a 10-point lead, 42-32, into the intermission.

The Eagles held a 54-44 lead at the 13:45 mark of the second half. Steen fought through contact and converted an and-one to cut the lead to single digits.

Boston College would later extend its lead to 14, 59-45, with 11:28 remaining in the game.

Thomas Bassong would later make a 3-point shot to cut the lead to single digits once again and sparked a quick 6-0 run to put the Seminoles within four, 61-57, with 7:26 remaining.

AJ Swinton made a 3-point shot to tie the game at 68-68, and Jones fought for his eighth rebound and scored a second-chance layup to give Florida State its first lead of the second half.

Jones finished with 10 points in addition to his nine rebounds. Jones led both teams with four offensive rebounds.

The Eagles tied the game at 70-70 on a field goal by Fred Payne at the 2:04 mark before Wiggins scored the game winning 3-point field goal with 1:49 left to play.

Florida State outscored the Eagles 10-2 through the final two minutes of the game.

Payne led the Eagles with 22 points on nine of 18 shooting from the field.

The Seminoles travel to play at Clemson at the Littlejohn Coliseum on Saturday, February 21, at 12:00 p.m.
