AIKEN, S.C. – No. 18 Florida State will face No. 11 Duke in the first round of the Old Barnwell Match Play Championship at the Old Barnwell Golf Club beginning Sunday at 9:15. The tournament dates have been changed to Sunday (March 15) and Tuesday (March 17) because of weather expected in the area on Monday.
Florida State is joined by No. 5 Auburn, No. 8 Wake Forest, No. 11 Duke, No. 16 Mississippi State, No. 17 Ole Miss, No. 22 South Carolina, and No. 55 Alabama in the two day event.
The teams are seeded according to the current Scoreboard by Clipp'd rankings with Auburn facing Alabama, Wake Forest playing South Carolina, Florida State meeting Duke, and Mississippi State teeing off against Ole Miss.
Each of the eight teams will play in three matches over the two-day event. Once a team has won three of the five singles matches, any remaining matches will be halted as they stand. A round will be extended for as many holes as necessary to determine a winner.
'We love to get some match play competition in during this time of year so we can get comfortable with it for the post season," said Seminole head coach Amy Bond. "Old Barnwell has compiled some great teams for us to play against. This is going to be a fun couple of days that will see a lot of great golf and the opportunity to learn a lot about ourselves moving forward."
The match play lineups are determined utilizing the same methods as for the Presidents Cup matches. The higher seeded teams are presented with the choice of submitting the first player on the board for the first match followed by its opponent selecting its first player. Each of the teams will continue that process until all five players for both teams have been named.
Florida State's lineup consists of sophomores Sophia Fullbrook, Alexandra Gazzoli, Elin Pudas Remler, and Freya Russell, along with freshmen Haley Davis and Haruhi Nakatani.
Pudas Remler led the Seminoles to a second place finish in the team standings at the power-packed Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the Long Cove Course in Hilton Head in their last event. Pudas Remer finished in a career-best second place in the individual standings of the Darius Rucker with a career-best score of 207 in the 54-hole event. She totaled career-best scores for a single-round (66 in the second round), 36 holes (135), and for a three round tournament score (207) in the best performance of her 10-match collegiate career.
Fullbrook, who is ranked No. 32 in the individual rankings Scoreboard by Clipp'd rankings, finished in eighth place in the individual standings at the Darius Rucker. She carded her first career collegiate hole in one earlier this season at the Moon Invitational and has finished at or under par in three of her last five events. Fullbrook is three strokes under par in six events during her sophomore season.
