TALLAHASSEE - The Florida State volleyball team (4-4) fell 3-0 to FIU (6-4) Sunday afternoon inside Tully Gymnasium.
Senior outside hitter Kyleene Filimaua led the Seminoles with 10 kills and eight digs, followed by sophomore middle blocker Nenu Kpea with nine kills and four blocks and junior middle blocker Delaney Ewing with eight kills and four blocks.
Junior setter Callie Kieffer recorded a match-high 17 assists, while sophomore outside hitter Victoria David paced the Seminoles with nine digs.
FIU opened the first set with a 14-7 lead and later extended the advantage to 16-8 before Florida State began to rally. Kills from Filimaua, Kpea, junior opposite hitter Johanna Sova and freshman outside hitter Sofia Moss, along with a combined block from Sova and Kpea, brought the Seminoles within 19-17. The Panthers responded with three consecutive points to push their lead back to 22-17. FSU twice cut the deficit to two points late in the set, but FIU held on for a 25-22 victory.
Florida State took a 9-6 lead in the second set behind kills from Ewing and Moss and a combined block from junior opposite hitter Bailey Higgins and Ewing. FIU rallied to tie the set at 14-14, and the teams remained even at 17-17 before the Panthers scored six straight points. The Seminoles answered with five consecutive points to pull within 23-22 with Filimaua opening the run with a kill before Kieffer served through a Sova kill and two blocks. After a Filimaua kill brought the Seminoles within one at 24-23, but the Panthers closed out the set 25-23.
Florida State took an early 5-2 lead in the third set behind a kill from Ewing and a block from Ewing and Higgins. FIU responded with four straight points and continued to build its lead, taking a 15-10 into the media break and eventually winning the set 25-16 to complete the 3-0 sweep.
Florida State returns to action Monday against North Alabama at Tully Gymnasium. First serve is set for 6 p.m. and the match will be broadcast live on ACCNX, with live stats available on Seminoles.com.
