WHY I WEAR MY NUMBER
I wear No. 33 at Florida State because it’s the number I wore in high school when I was a three-time All-Conference and three-time conference Defensive Player of the Year. I wore No. 22 during my career at Brown.
Jaylan Gainey is the 24th player in school history to earn uniform No. 33 at Florida State. Ron King, who helped lead Florida State to the 1972 NCAA National Championship game wore No. 33 as a Seminole (1971-73). King is ranked fourth in school history for career points; he scored 1,252 points and averaged 19.6 points per game during his Seminole career.

My full name is Jaylan Emanuel Gainey. My parents liked the ring of the name Jaylan, and Emanuel is my father’s first name.

Averaged 2.8 points (11th on the team) and 2.0 rebounds (eighth) while playing in 28 games in his only active season as a Seminole…missed the first five games the 2023-24 season while completing rehabilitation on his injured knee that forced him to miss the entire 2022-23 season and 37 games in total…ranked third on the team with 20 blocked shots which gave him 145 career blocked shots in 93 career games…multiple blocked shots came in five different games with his Florida State high of three coming as a starter in Florida State’s victory over Miami on Senior Day at the Donald L. A redshirt season after injuring his right knee on September 23, 2022 in a preseason practice inside the Florida State Basketball Training Center...worked on rehabilitation with Florida State’s medical staff throughout the year while earning his Master’s Degree in Athletic Coaching.
SUMMER 2022 – CANADIAN EXHIBITION TOUR
Averaged 8.7 points (26 total points), 7.0 rebounds (21 total rebounds), and 1.7 blocked shots (5 total blocked shots), while shooting .600 percent from the field (9 of 15) during the Seminoles’ 3-game tour of Canada during August of 2022…a starter with 6 points, a team-leading 8 rebounds 2 blocked shots and 1 steal in Florida State’s victory over Ottawa in the first game of its three-game summer tour of Canada…played a total of 12 minutes as starter in the game one win…totaled 8 points (on four of six shooting from the free throw line), 1 assists and 1 blocked shot in the Seminoles 98-64 win over Carleton in the second game of the exhibition tour…played 15 minutes in the win over Carleton…earned a double-double of 12 point and 10 rebounds in the Seminoles’ 90-74 win over McGill University in the final game of their summer tour of Canada…Florida State defeated the University of Ottawa, Carleton University and McGill to finish with a 3-0 record on their 10-day trip north of the border.
AS A SENIOR (2022)
Graduated from Brown University in 2022 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Economics…averaged a career-high 9.3 points (fourth on the team), a career-high 6.9 rebounds (second) and a career-high 2.2 blocked shots per game (first)…shot a career-high .703 percent from the field (first)…led the Ivy league in blocked shots and field goal shooting percentage…an incredibly effective shooter who was ranked seventh nationally with a .703 shooting percentage from 2-point range…started all 29 games his senior season while having his best season at the program…Gainey’s career high’s at Brown were 25 points against Columbia (Feb. 26), 18 rebounds against Yale (March 5), and eight blocks also against Columbia on (Feb. 26)..two-time Ivy League Player of the Week for his performances against Columbia (25 points, 12 rebounds, eight blocked shots) (Feb. 26) and Yale (20 points, 18 rebounds) (March 5)…a buzzer-beating dunk gave Brown an 81-80 win over Cornel (Feb. 12)l…finished the game against the Big Red with 16 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots…named as the Ivy-League Co-Player of the Week for a career-high 25-points, 12-rebound and eight blocked shots outing in an 81-74 win over Columbia…shared the honor with Aaryn Rai of Dartmouth (Feb. 27)…his eight blocked shots rank as the single-game record for the Brown basketball program…his career-high of 25 points came on a perfect nine of nine shooting game against Columbia (Feb. 26)…scored in double figures in a career-high 10 games including in six Ivy League games…in shooting better than 70 percent from the floor for the season, he shot below .500 percent from the field only twice in his 29 games played…was perfect from the field in seven different games including a three-game stretch against Sacred Heart (Dec. 5), at Merrimack (Dec. 7) and against Vermont (Dec. 10) when he made 16 of 16 shots...enjoyed a two-game span against Penn (Feb. 19) and Columbia (Feb. 26) when he made 14 of 14 shots…a career-high five double doubles at Quinnipiac (10 points and 10 rebounds), against Harvard (13 points and 13 rebounds), against Dartmouth (12 points and 13 rebounds), against Columbia (25 points and 12 rebounds) and at Yale (20 points and a career-high 18 rebounds)…played two games against ACC opponents with four points coming against both North Carolina (Nov. 12) and Syracuse (Dec. 27).
AS A JUNIOR (2021)
Did not play in any games as the entire season for each of the eight Ivy League teams was cancelled because of the Covid-19 Pandemic…The Ivy League Council of Presidents unanimously decided to cancel all winter sports for the 2020-21 season and postponed spring sports until the end of February 2021 on November 12, 2020…the Ivy League was the first Division-I conference to cancel winter sports, repeating a precedent it set earlier this year when the league canceled fall sports…the league presidents held their vote during the second week of November in 2020, and coaches were informed by athletic department officials on November 12…The decision came 13 days before the scheduled start of the college basketball season…the Ivy League Council of Presidents announced at the time that student-athletes affected by the decision would not lose a season of Ivy League or NCAA eligibility…the Ivy League Council of Presidents said "Student-athletes, their families and coaches are again being asked to make enormous sacrifices for the good of public health—and we do not make this decision lightly. While these decisions come with great disappointment and frustration, our commitment to the safety and lasting health of our student-athletes and wider communities must remain our highest priority."
AS A SOPHOMORE (2020)
Averaged 5.9 points (fourth on the team), 5.1 rebounds (third), 2.2 blocked shots (first) and shot .685 percent from the field (first) in helping the Bears to a 15-12 overall record and an 8-6 record in Ivy League play…named the Ivy League’s Defensive Player of the Year…led the Ivy League and ranked 29th nationally with 2.2 blocked shots per game…finished with 54 blocks, the sixth best total in Brown basketball history…matched the Brown school record with seven blocked shots vs. Merrimack (Dec. 4)…blocked five shots in Ivy League action against Yale (Jan. 17), with four coming against Princeton (Feb. 28) and Harvard (March 6)…scored in double figures seven times including five times in Ivy League play…his Ivy League season-high of 11 points came at Yale (Jan. 17), Dartmouth (Feb.7) and at Cornell (Feb. 22)…shot a phenomenal .685 percent from the field (63-of-92) for the season…totaled his season-high of 12 rebounds against Penn (Feb. 14) and at Columbia (Feb. 21)…posted his first career double-double at Columbia with 10 points and 12 rebounds…scored his season-high of 14 points vs. Sacred Heart as he connected on 7-of-7 field goals, with six dunks and a tip-in (Nov. 19)…first career game against a member of the ACC came when Brown traveled to face Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium…totaled six points one rebound and two blocked shots in 75-50 Duke win.
AS A FRESHMAN (2019)
Averaged 2.3 points (10th on the team), 2.2 rebounds (tied for seventh) and 0.7 blocked shots (third) in 11 games in his first collegiate season…helped Brown advance to the second round of the CBI as Brown defeated UAB (83-78) before falling at Loyola Marymount in the second round (81-63)…his season-high of 12 points came against Johnson & Wales (Jan. 14)…totaled his season-high for points (12) and rebounds (6) vs. Johnson & Wales, while blocking two shots...connected on 3-of-3 field goals and 6-of-9 free throws vs. Johnson & Wales…scored five points and blocked a season-high three shots against Loyola Marymount (March 25) in the second round of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI)…pulled down four rebounds vs. Harvard.

Graduated from the Academy at Smith in 2018…a three-time All-Conference selection (2016-2018)…a three-year conference Defensive Player of the Year (2016-2018)…a member of the National Honor Society who graduated Magna Cum Laude.
