TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Darin Green Jr. scored 18 points and Cam'Ron Fletcher added 13 to lead Florida State to a 94-67 win over Kennesaw State in its season opener at the Donald L. Tucker Center. Green Jr. made three 3-point shots to bring his career total to 302 as the Seminoles never trailed, led by 15 at halftime and increased their lead to 35 in the second half in winning their season opener for the ninth time in the last 11 years.
Tom House, who celebrated his 20th birthday, totaled nine on three made 3-point shots – all three of which came in a span of 58 seconds late in the first half to give the Seminoles a commanding 48-25 lead with 3:46 remaining before halftime.
"We had good moments defensively, and offensively in the first half we made the most of our threes and transitions," said Florida State Head Coach Leonard Hamilton, who upped his record to 28-8 in 36 career season opening games.
In addition to leading the Seminoles in scoring, Green Jr. added three rebounds, one assist, and one blocked shot in 23 minutes of playing time as a starter.
"Darin normally leads by example and is in his teammates' ears away from the court," said Hamilton. "I thought he played the game the right way tonight."
House had the birthday magic working as he finished the first half with perfect from the field -- three of three -- in finishing with career-high nine points. He also totaled two rebounds and four assists.
Fletcher played a solid all-around game as he finished as Florida State's second-leading scorer while totaling five rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one blocked shot.
Baba Miller, Jalen Warley, Cam Corhen, and Josh Nickelberry all scored nine points or more in the win.
Florida State made a statement from the start as it scored first-half 49 points, while shooting 50.0 percent from the field. Defensively, Florida State limited Kennesaw State to 34 points and 32.5 percent shooting from the field in the first 20 minutes.
The Seminoles carried their defensive energy into the second half as they limited the Owls to only four points for the first eight minutes of play. Offensively, Florida State scored 45 points in the second half, with 24 points coming from off the bench. Florida State outrebounded the Owls (48-46) while totaling 22 assists, nine steals, and nine blocks.
"It was encouraging for us to come out and play with that fire in the second half," said Hamilton. "I was also pleased with our rotation with that being the staple of our program for years."
Guard, Simeon Cottle was the leading scorer for Kennesaw State with scoring 18 of their 67 points.
