Noles Win FSU Fall Classic, UNF Invite

Tallahassee, Fla.  –  The Florida State swimming and diving teams secured three wins on Saturday. Both the men's and women's team won the FSU Fall Classic and members of the women's team also brought home the victory at the UNF Invite.

"It was a great way to start the year," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "I'm really proud of how the team competed hard and stayed positive throughout the meet. They kept a great team spirit through every event."

Maysa Ratiu won the 500 free

The women opened the second day of the FSU Fall Classic at the Morcom Aquatic Center by winning the first three events.

The 400 medley relay won by five seconds behind Sarah Evans, Maddy Huggins, Sophie Freeman and Gloria Muzito with a time of 3:42.43.

Maysa Ratiu added a three-second win in the 500 free (5:00.28) and Huggins followed with a victory in the 200 breast (2:15.64).

Rookie Reese Hinnerichs was the runner-up in the 200 back and Freeman (2:01.73) and Edith Jernstedt (2:02.33) placed second and third in the 200 fly.

Huggins added her second win of the day, taking the 200 IM at 2:04.29.

The Noles finished the day in second place in the 200 free relay behind the team of Muzito, Evans, Jernstedt and Alexandra Dicks with a time of 1:34.19.

The women scored 231 points ahead of TCU (191), Georgia Tech (172) and Liberty (120).

Tommaso Baravelli 

Max Wilson, Tommaso Baravelli, Tobias Schulrath and Peter Varjasi won the men's 400 medley relay with a time of 3:16.12.

Yordan Yanchev (4:23.47) and Utku Kurtdere (4:35.26) added second and third place points in the 500 free.  Baravelli was third in the 200 breast (2:03.13) and Jaka Pusnik took third in the 200 back (1:49.03).

Varjasi picked up a much-needed win in the 100 free (44.54) and Yanchev was third (45.03).

Kurtdere (1:48.61) and Brennan Hammond (1:49.48) placed first and second in the 200 fly and Mason Herbet was the runner-up in the 200 IM (1:48.87).

FSU closed out the meet with a win in the 200 free relay behind Varjasi, Jokubas Keblys, Yanchev and Herbet at 1:20.91.

Izzy Gregersen

Darwin Nolasco finished second on 1-meter to lead the Noles with a score of 324.20, while Izzy Gregersen was third (233.80).

"It's early in the year for us but I like what we saw from our team," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "Darwin was the big cat today. He hit some great dives and for it only being September, he's only going to get better."

The men won the team title with a total of 238 points ahead of Georgia Tech (220) and TCU (170).

Rachel Moran

Members of the women's team competed at UNF Competition Pool Complex in Jacksonville on Saturday morning.

Mabry Bishop, Rachel Moran, Jenny Bird and Sara Moulson started the day with a win in the 400 medley relay at 3:52.05.

Arianna Ottavianelli was the runner-up in the 100 IM, touching at 1:00.95 ahead of Sydney Boals (1:02.49) in fourth.

FSU went one-two in the 500 free, led by Julia Brzozowski (5:03.71) in first and Ella Dyjak in second (5:03.81).

Hailey Heldenbrand was the winner in the 200 back (2:03.58) ahead of Moulson (2:04.83) and Bishop (2:07.17) in third.

Moran placed first in the 200 breast (2:22.28) before the Noles went first, second and third in the 100 fly, led by Bird (56.19). Aimee DuHamel followed in second (56.98) and Bishop was third (57.11).

FSU had six swimmers in the top eight of the 100 free, led by Victoria Valko (52.53) in first place. Gabrianna Banks (52.85) followed in second at 52.85. Brooke Arnold (53.25) placed fourth, followed by Kiara Caamano (53.45) in fifth and Heldenbrand (53.56) was sixth. Phoebe Griffiths followed in eighth (53.88).

Moulson took first in the 200 IM (2:08.58) before FSU finished second in the 200 free relay to end the meet behind Heldenbrand, Arnold, Valko and Banks (1:36.24).

The Noles won the meet with a total of 1,056 points ahead of UNF (770.5), Campbell (745.5) and Georgia Southern (666).

"We had a really great day today," FSU associate head coach Athena Spellman said. "We learned from little mistakes yesterday and really applied some good changes that made some big differences in races. I'm really looking forward to seeing our continued growth throughout the season."
