MELBOURNE, Fla. – As she looks out over the course at the Suntree Golf Club, Mirabel Ting remembers everything about the 2023 Moon Invitational.
"I remember that I played really well in the event last year," said Ting. "The thing I did really well was play in the first event of my career without any expectations. I felt like I drove the ball tee to green really well, and putts dropped that week for me, too."
The thing about the event that she probably remembers the most was that she won the individual championship with a 13-under par score of 203. She earned scores of 68-67-68 and finished as the champion after an exciting playoff hole against Michigan State's Leila Raines. Both individuals shot a tournament record-tying score of 13-under (203).
Ting's single round score (67 in the second round), her 36-hole score (135), her tournament score (203), and her tournament sore vs. par (-13) all still rank as her career best statistics. She earned six top-five finishes and earned All-America honors as a freshman.
Fast-forward to the Seventh Annual 2024 Moon Invitational which begins Saturday and Ting is back to defend her championship. Only this year, she's wearing the Garnet and Gold for the Florida State Seminoles after transferring from Augusta University following her freshman season.
Because of weather in the area, the event will begin on Saturday with nine holes. Following an off-day because of weather concerns on Sunday, the teams will play 27 holes on Monday and finished the championship on Tuesday with 18 final holes.
"Winning is fun, but learning in each event is really important to me," said Ting. "The opportunity to play the course again this year with the girls, I think it will be even better."
Simply having the opportunity to play for the Seminoles this spring means the world to Ting. She was initially ruled ineligible to compete as a Seminole because of transfer protocols, but gained her eligibility at the end of the fall semester.
"Coach Amy (Bond) called me right before Christmas and said she has great news," said Ting. "Right after she said I was eligible, I cried because I was really thankful for everything that the team, coaches, members of the compliance office, and our administration did for me to be eligible."
Ting began her Florida State career in style as she earned a seventh place finish in helping the Seminoles to the team championship at the spring-season opening Collegiate Invitational at the Guadalajara County Club. She carded scores of 71 and 72 in her first two rounds as a Seminole, and finished as the Seminoles' second-leading golfer in the event.
"It was really fun being around the team at Guadalajara last week," said Ting. "I couldn't be more happy to be a member of this great group of girls."
Ting gained her seventh career top-10 finish in the first nine events of her collegiate career in helping the Seminoles to lead the event wire-to-wire in earning their first team championship of the spring season.
"Mirabel has been a great addition to our program -- not only as a golfer but as a person," said Bond, who earned her program record 20th win at the Collegiate Invitational in Guadalajara. "She was quiet early on, but has come out of her shell in the best way. Mirabel has a great sense of humor and has fit right in with the team."
Bond's Seminoles face one of their toughest tests of the spring season in the 17-team Moon Invitational field, which includes 12 of the top-25 ranked teams in the nation.
The Moon Invitational features 17 teams including No. 1 Wake Forest, No. 3 Arkansas, No. 9 Florida, No. 10 LSU, No. 11 Ole Miss, No. 12 Texas A&M, No. 13 UCF, No. 14 Northwestern, No. 15 Auburn, No. 16 Duke, No. 17 Clemson, and the No. 21 ranked Seminoles.
LSU enters the event as the defending tournament champion. The Tigers carded a tournament record total of 30-under to win the championship in 2023. Florida State, which is participating in the event for the fourth time, won the team championship in 2022.
Sophomore Lottie Woad has welcomed Ting with open arms.
"Mirabel has been a great addition to our team," said Woad. "We push each other on the course, and I'm looking forward to continuing to compete with her throughout my career as a Seminole."
Ting's personal goals are intertwined with Florida State's team goals, which include the Seminoles' primary goal of winning championships in April and May.
"I'm looking forward to helping our team qualify for the finals of the National Championship in May," said Ting.
Bond knows that she has a team full of gemstones, and that Ting is an exciting addition to an already dynamic group.
"Mirabel has a drive to be the best, and is an extremely blessed ball striker," said Bond. "When she hits a shot it's rare that it leaves the flag stick. She is fun to be around, and you never quite know what will come out of her mouth. She is very respectful and wants to make an impact. I am thankful she chose to be a Seminole and can't wait to see what the next three years have in store for her and our program."
