TALLAHASSEE – The No. 14 Florida State men's tennis team (9-2) cruised to victory over South Alabama (4-5) on Sunday afternoon for their sixth straight win.
"I thought we started the match with outstanding doubles play and were really strong," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "We moved into singles, got four of the six first sets and took control from there".
The doubles round was clinical as Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif blanked their opponents 6-0. The 14th-ranked pair in the nation earned their seventh straight win and didn't drop a game for the first time this season.
Loris Pourroy and Youcef Rihane enjoyed a similar result as they secured another 6-2 doubles victory, matching their result from Friday to secure the first point. Azariah Rusher and Alex Bulte were leading 4-3 before the match was left unfinished.
Rihane capped off an incredible weekend as he earned another straight-sets victory 6-1, 6-2. After his 6-1, 6-0 victory on Friday, the four dropped games mark the most commanding two-match stretch of his career.
Pourroy earned a comfortable win on Court 2 as he prevailed 6-1, 6-4 to earn his fifth straight singles victory. Jamie Connel dominated early with a perfect first set before needing a 7-5 frame to scrape out a straight-sets win and claim the match-winning point.
Bulte dropped his match in two sets before Cornut-Chauvinc, the No. 13 singles player in the country, was able to outlast his opponent on Court 1 with identical 6-4 frames to remain undefeated in singles. Dous-Karpenschif secured back-to-back three-set wins as he rattled off 6-4, 6-3 sets to notch another singles victory.
Florida State will resume conference play with two road matches next weekend against Louisville and Notre Dame. The match against Louisville begins Friday at 5 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center before the Seminoles face Notre Dame on Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
