ATLANTA, Ga. –The No. 15 Florida State men's tennis team pulled off an epic comeback to take a thrilling 4-3 match win over Georgia Tech on Thursday afternoon.
"Our freshmen were forced into the fire and rose to the occasion while Loris (Pourroy) came through at the end to seal the match in a really good team effort," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said.
The day began with a tightly contested doubles round that saw momentum swing back and forth. In their first appearance as a pair, Jamie Connel and Justin Lyons rolled through their match on Court 3 with a 6-1 win. Georgia Tech grabbed victories on Courts 1 and 2 to seal the first point of the afternoon.
Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc dropped in straight-sets for his first defeat in a singles match all season and first since May 6, 2023.
Youcef Rihane and Connel punched back as each took their first set convincingly and fought off late rallies to quickly tie the match back up at 2-2. Rihane took his 10th singles win of the season.
Georgia Tech reclaimed the lead with a straight-sets win on Court 5 before Azariah Rusher stepped up to the moment on Court 6. The freshman came into the spot on short notice and didn't let the pressure overwhelm him as he dominated the first set tiebreaker before cruising to a 6-2 second set and claiming a vital third point and his fourth career singles victory.
All hopes lied in Court 2 where Loris Pourroy split the first two frames to set up the match-winning third set. He marched out to a strong 3-1 lead before pulling away and clinching the match for the Seminoles at 6-3 for the first time since sweeping in-state rivals Florida in February.
Florida State is 15-5 and 5-3 in the ACC. The Seminoles will continue their two-match road trip with Clemson on Saturday at 2 p.m.
