TALLAHASSEE - The No. 15 Florida State softball team (44-14) used three runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 3-2 comeback win over Chattanooga (42-15) on Friday night in the first round of the 2024 Tallahassee Regional at JoAnne Graf Field. FSU will move on to play UCF tomorrow at 1 p.m. for a spot in the Regional Final.
It was a classic pitcher's duel for the first three innings as the teams combined for just three hits. The Mocs broke through first in the top of the fourth with two runs on a two-out double to give them the lead. FSU couldn't get anything going in the bottom of the fourth, but Jahni Kerr broke the silence in the bottom of the fifth as she hit her third triple of the season to give the Noles some life. Autumn Belviy pinch ran for Kerr, and scampered home as Hallie Wacaser hit an infield single up the middle to cut the lead to one.
The Mocs got a baserunner with one out in the sixth, but Jaysoni Beachum started a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning to give the Noles more momentum. Kalei Harding got the rally started with a walk, and Michaela Edenfield hit a groundball through the right side of the infield. Harding sprinted to third, and Edenfield went to second to put two runners in scoring position. Isa Torres hit a deep fly ball to score Harding on a sacrifice fly. Devyn Flaherty stepped in with two outs and delivered in the moment with a triple to give the Noles the lead.
Ashtyn Danley shut down the Mocs in the top of the seventh as she struck out the first and final batter of the innings. Torres made a leaping grab at shortstop for the second out of the inning to keep the Mocs off the basepaths.
Allison Royalty got the start and went 4.1 innings and allowed just three hits. Danley came in and closed the door, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings while striking out three.
