TALLAHASSEE – Taylor Bol Bowen scored a career-high 20 points, and Malique Ewin earned his fourth consecutive double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Florida State to its second consecutive ACC victory with a 91-78 win over Georgia Tech at the Donald L. Tucker Center.
Florida State improved to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in ACC play. Georgia Tech is now 8-11 and 2-6 in the ACC.
Bol Bowen and Ewin led three Seminoles in double figure scoring as senior Jamir Watkins scored 17 points. Ewin and Watkins have now scored in double figures in 15 consecutive games – every Florida State game since November 15 including each of the Seminoles' seven ACC games.
Bol Bowen topped his previous career high of 17 on a dunk with 3:11 remaining in the game. He reached the 20-point plateau for the first time in his career in another dunk with 1:59 remaining in Florida State's fourth win in its last five conference games.
Ewin has now earned four consecutive double-doubles with double-figures in points and rebounds coming in games against Miami, Clemson, Pittsburgh, and now Georgia Tech. He is averaging 17.5 points and 11.0 rebounds since leading the Seminoles over the Hurricanes on January 8.
"He's (Malique) different," said Bol Bowen. "I never played with a player so skilled out there. He's just different. He's a great teammate, great, great friend. I'm just happy, and excited for him."
Florida State started hot and gathered a tremendous amount of momentum early on both ends of the court.
"We had some moments where I thought that we were really on point, both on offensive and defense," said Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton.
Ewin scored the first basket of the game and Florida State never trailed.
Florida State's biggest lead in the first half was 16 (26-10). The Seminoles' biggest lead of the second half and the game was 17 (89-72). Florida State scored nine of the first 11 points of the game as Ewin, Bol Bowen, and freshman Daquan Davis combined to give Florida State a 9-2 advantage after only 2:43 of the first half.
"We realized how hard it is to win in this league and how much effort and intensity we've got to play with," said Bol Bowen. "Since we lost at Clemson, we've been trying to pick that up."
Justin Thomas played a complete game with eight rebounds, a team-leading five assists, and a team-leading three steals.
"JT is coming off the bench doing his deal, being aggressive," said Hamilton. "That's the way we want to play."
Georgia Tech scored the first 10 points of the second half to trim Florida State's lead to three at 37-34.
The Seminoles answered the Yellow Jackets' charge as they scored 10 of the next 12 points to increase their advantage back to 11 at 47-36. Florida State's advantage never dropped below four during the remainder of the game.
