Florida State is 0-2-0 in Palo Alto, California, and 3-1-0 at a neutral site, all the College Cup. The Seminoles have won three of the last four games, including the 2023 NCAA title game, while the other two wins occurred in the 2014 and 2018 national semifinals, both 2-0 contests on Florida State's way to its first two national championships. The two teams first squared off in the 2010 NCAA quarterfinal, a 5-0 defeat at Stanford, before a 3-0 loss in the 2011 NCAA semifinal. The other meeting, and FSU's last loss in the series, was in the 2017 NCAA third round, 1-0 in Palo Alto.

To win the program's fourth national championship, the Seminoles beat the Cardinal 5-1 on December 4, 2023, in Cary, North Carolina. Dudley opened the title game scoring in the 29th minute, and FSU made it 2-0 just 26 seconds later. Stanford's lone goal came in the 52nd minute before Florida State scored the next three, in the 58th, 61st and 84th minutes. The champions had a 16-5 advantage in shots, 8-1 in shots on goal. Dudley had a goal and an assist and is one of three current players to start in the contest, with another two coming off the bench.

The Seminoles suffered their first loss of the season, and first defeat in regulation or overtime in more than a year. The Fighting Irish remained unbeaten on the season and became the first team to score more than one goal on FSU this year.
