FSU Shuts out Samford to Advance to NCAA Second Round

11/14/2025 10:24:00 PM | Women's Soccer

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 3-seeded Florida State soccer team defeated Samford 4-0 on Friday evening in the NCAA Tournament First Round at the Seminole Soccer Complex.

Making its 26th NCAA Tournament appearance, all consecutively since 2000, FSU advances to the Second Round for the 25th time overall and the 21st year in a row. The Seminoles improve to 84-19-6 all-time in NCAA play and 25-0-1 in the First Round. FSU's Second Round matchup is set for November 20, with an opponent and complete details to be confirmed later this weekend.

The win is the 250th of head coach Brian Pensky's career. He boasts a 250-118-57 career record in 21 seasons and a 65-7-12 mark in four seasons at Florida State. He has advanced to the NCAA Second Round 10 times in his career, including five years in a row and all four at FSU.

With their 10th shutout of the season, the Seminoles (11-2-4), bested the Bulldogs (13-3-5) for the second year in a row to begin NCAA play. The victory snapped Samford's 14-game unbeaten streak and improves FSU's all-time record against SU to 6-0-0, including 4-0-0 in NCAA play.

Sophomore midfielder Taylor Suarez led the way offensively with a goal and two assists, including the game-winner. She led all players with four shots and three shots on goal. Suarez's four points, two assists and four shots all tie career highs.

Junior midfielder Yuna McCormack netted the game-winning goal in the 11th minute to give FSU the early lead, as Suarez got her first assist. Suarez made it 2-0 quickly out of halftime, in the 49th minute off a rebound from junior forward Jordynn Dudley, while sophomore forward Wrianna Hudson followed it up in the 61st minute for her team-leading 12th goal of the season to make it 3-0. Suarez and freshman forward Nyanya Touray assisted on the goal. Sophomore midfielder Lara Dantas added the fourth and final score in the 79th minute for a 4-0 lead on her first goal of the season, with the assist to fifth-year midfielder Marianyela Jiménez.

Florida State out-shot Samford 22-4 with an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal. The home side earned five corner kicks and did not allow one.

Freshman goalkeeper Kate Ockene stopped the only shot she faced on frame to earn her second complete-game shutout of the season, both in the last two games. Samford's keeper made seven saves.

Florida State got on the board at 10:01 with a score from McCormack. Suarez drove through the Samford penalty box and tapped the ball into the goal box, which missed the gloves of the Bulldog keeper and found the cleat of McCormack. The goal is her fifth of the season, and second game-winner, while the assist is Suarez's fifth. The score marks McCormack's eighth career goal and second in NCAA Tournament play.

Hudson and Washington continued the pressure in the following minutes, forcing diving saves out of the Samford keeper. The Bulldogs' first shot came in the 23rd minute, but it was blocked by senior defender Sophia Nguyen. Ockene made her first and only save in the 28th minute.

Florida State outshot Samford 10-3 with a 4-1 edge on shots on goal in the first 45 minutes. FSU led SU 2-0 in corner kicks, and Ockene had one save to Samford's three. Hudson, McCormack and Suarez each registered two shots in the first half.

Suarez would net the second goal early in the second half, at 48:26. A shot by Dudley on the edge of the goal box was blocked by the Samford goalkeeper, but the rebound bounced into a perfectly-centered position for a charging Suarez, who gave the keeper no time to react.

The goal is Suarez's fifth of the year and eighth of her career and also serves as her first NCAA goal. Dudley recorded her 12th assist, setting a new career-high for a single season. The point puts her at 30 on the season, leading the team and besting her 2024 total of 29.

An excellent string of passes led to another Seminole score at 60:20. Touray directed a pass through multiple Samford defenders to Suarez in the penalty box, who quickly crossed it to Hudson in the goal box. Hudson's right-footed tap directed the ball into the center of the goal for her 12th score of the season.

The goal is Hudson's second of her career in the NCAA Tournament and her 23rd overall in her two collegiate seasons.

Dantas scored her first of the year at 78:13 on an assist from Jiménez. Jiménez made a quick right-footed stop near the Samford endline and crossed the ball over to the right side. Dantas played it off the bounce and buried a shot into the bottom left corner of the net, her sixth career goal. The play also was Jiménez's fifth assist of the season.

In the second half, Florida State outpaced Samford 12-1 in shots and 7-0 in shots on goal. FSU added three more corner kicks without allowing Samford any attempts. Ockene did not have to make a save while her Samford counterpart totaled four in the last 45 minutes.

With the win, Florida State advances to the NCAA Second Round and will face the winner of Saturday's match between No 6-seeded Mississippi State and Lipscomb on Thursday, Nov. 20. Game time and location will be set at the conclusion of this weekend's opening round.
