Noles Grind Out Five-Set Win Over Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Florida State volleyball team (14-11, 8-8) got back into the win column on Sunday afternoon with a five-set win (25-19, 23-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-12) over Notre Dame (9-15, 6-10) in South Bend, Ind.
It was the Kyleene Filimaua show as she did a little bit of everything for the Noles. Filimaua recorded 19 kills to go along with five aces, 13 digs and three blocks. Filimaua's five aces tied her career high. Filimaua also recorded her 11th double double of the season. Iane Henke continued her steady play as well with a double double of her own as she recorded 19 kills and 11 digs for the Garnet and Gold. Nenu Kpea had a great match on her birthday as the freshman tallied nine kills on 14 swings and recorded a career-best nine blocks. Lily Nicholson and Nellie Stevenson also recorded double doubles for the Garnet and Gold as Nicholson tallied 25 assists and 10 digs while Stevenson had 20 assists and 10 digs.
It was all Noles in set one as the Noles jumped out to an early lead and never looked back thanks to a 6-0 run that put them up 13-6. The Noles went on to win the set 25-19 after hitting .300 while holding Notre Dame to just a .091 hitting percentage.
Notre Dame found its spark in the second set and raced out to an 18-11 lead, but the Noles did not go down quietly as they went on 9-2 run to tie the match at 20 courtesy of an ace from Caylan Russ. The teams traded points, but ultimately, the Fighting Irish came out on top 25-23.
The Noles got right back to work in set three as they raced out to a 5-0 lead thanks to a couple of aces from Filimaua. The Noles never surrendered the lead to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The roles were reversed in set four as the Fighting Irish controlled the set to send the match to a winner-take-all set five.
Notre Dame threw the first punch in set five taking a 4-2 lead, but the Noles responded with a 7-2 run to take a 9-6 lead. Notre Dame tied it back up at nine, but two big blocks from Payton Whalen and Johanna Sova gave the Noles a 11-9 lead. The teams traded points, and with the Noles up 13-12, Henke delivered with the biggest kill of the match to give the Noles match point. A ball handling error gave the final point to give the Noles its fifth-consecutive victory over Notre Dame.
FSU will return home next week to face No. 15 North Carolina at Tully Gym at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night.
