Champs Again! Florida State Soccer Wins Fifth National Title

12/8/2025 10:58:00 PM | Women's Soccer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Florida State soccer team won its fifth national title with a dramatic 1-0 win over Stanford in the NCAA College Cup National Championship Game on Monday night at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

The 20th title overall across Florida State Athletics, soccer's fifth National Championship title comes just two years after their last in 2023. It is the program's third in the last five years and fifth in its last six appearances in the National Championship Game, joining the title runs of 2014, 2018, 2021 and 2023.

Fans are invited to welcome back the national champions at two events on Tuesday, December 9, in Tallahassee. The team will return to Tallahassee at Million Air at approximately 2 p.m. ET. Fans can arrive at Million Air beginning at 1:30 p.m. The team will then light the spear at the Unconquered Statue at 5 p.m. followed by a ceremony in the Dunlap Champions Club beginning at 5:30 p.m. Fans will be able to meet and hear from the student-athlete and coaches as well as have photo opportunities with the National Championship trophy. Light food and beverages will be available as well.

Florida State improves to 89-19-6 all-time in the NCAA Tournament with a 5-3 record in the Championship Game. It is the second championship under fourth-year head coach Brian Pensky.

As familiar foes in the postseason, the third-seeded Seminoles (16-2-4) prevailed over the top-seeded Cardinal (21-2-2) in the seventh meeting all time in the NCAA Tournament and fifth in the College Cup between the two sides. They met once again on the biggest stage after a 5-1 win in the 2023 title game.

Sophomore forward Wrianna Hudson earned Offensive Most Outstanding Player honors and freshman goalkeeper Kate Ockene was named the Defensive Most Outstanding Player. Hudson scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute, her fourth goal of the postseason and her second game-winning score in the College Cup, both 1-0 contests. Meanwhile, Ockene made a career-best nine saves, one shy of tying the FSU record for saves in an NCAA Tournament game.

Senior defender Hether Gilchrist and sophomore midfielders Peyton McGovern and Taylor Suarez joined Hudson and Ockene on the College Cup All-Tournament Team.

As Hudson scored her team-leading 15th goal of the season, Suarez earned her fifth assist of the Tournament and ninth of the season, while sophomore defender Janet Okeke registered her first collegiate assist.

As Ockene's nine saves topped her previous career high of five, she collected her fifth shutout of her young career. She recorded 20 saves across the NCAA Tournament and finishes the season with a 9-0-3 record in goal. Her 20 NCAA saves are tied for sixth-most in a career in school history in postseason contests.

The Cardinal held an 18-8 advantage in shots with a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Florida State managed four corner kicks to Stanford's seven. Junior forward Jordynn Dudley tallied a team-leading four shots, while four other Seminoles recorded one shot each and three had one shot on goal.

Ockene hit her a new career high in saves less than 10 minutes into the game. The first Stanford chance came 19 seconds in, curling towards the right post yet with enough space for the freshman to dive and secure the ball. About five minutes later, Ockene made two saves about a minute apart. A Stanford chance from the right side of the penalty area was easily blocked by Ockene in the sixth minute, followed by a scooping stop on the left side at a minute later. She later made two great stops to punch away a pair of headers over the crossbar 37 seconds apart in the ninth minute.

The first shot of the night for FSU came from Suarez in the 15th minute. She ran up the right side, working past defenders but came off too strong on the shot, which sailed over the top of the goal.

Another quick save from Ockene in the 23rd minute kept Stanford off the board in the first half. A quick mid-air tap from just outside the goal box saw Ockene drop to her side to knock the low ball away. She made another save seven minutes later, easily securing a header attempt in the 30th.

A shot from junior midfielder Yuna McCormack in the 32nd minute would be the last attack of the half from the Seminoles, yet the defense proved resilient throughout the final minutes. Both sides left the pitch scoreless through the initial 45 minutes.

Stanford led 11-4 in shots with a 7-0 advantage on goal in the first half. The Seminoles took one corner kick to the Cardinal's five. Ockene made seven saves while her Stanford counterpart was without one. Dudley led with two shots while McCormack and Suarez posted one each.

Neither team took a shot through the first 15 minutes of the second half. Senior defender Kameron Simmonds managed the first shot on goal for the Seminoles in the 63rd minute, firing a long chance from the top of the 18-yard box to force a diving save out of the Cardinal keeper. Dudley followed up two minutes later, taking a mid-range chance in the 65th that the keeper managed to keep in front.

A strong free kick fired beyond the penalty box by Stanford was knocked away by Ockene in the 70th minute for her eighth save, and one of her best on the night. She made another timely catch in the 76th minute, perfectly positioned to intercept a header near the center of the goal.

As tensions ramped in the final minutes of regulation, Hudson was the one again to break the ice, one game after she posted the game-winner in the 73rd minute in the National Semifinal. An FSU corner kick saw the ball traded between the Seminoles and Cardinal until a failed clearance allowed Florida State to regain control. From the top of the penalty area, Okeke passed it to the right and found Suarez in open space. Her crossing pass into the goal box was initially countered by a sliding Stanford defender, but the attempt landed right at the feet of Hudson whose quick footwork knocked it into the back of the net.

The score was Hudson's 15th of the season, fourth of the postseason and would prove to be the game-winning goal, the second she's managed in NCAA play and her fifth of the 2025 campaign.

Stanford rattled off two more shots looking for the late equalizer, but the Seminole defense remained sturdy through the final three minutes of play to lock in the 1-0 win.

In the second half, Florida State put up four shots to Stanford's seven but held a 3-2 edge in shots on frame. The Seminoles took three corners to the Cardinal's two and each keeper managed two saves.
