Seminoles Hang Tough Against No. 20 Virginia

3/8/2026 3:59:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida State lacrosse team (2-7, 0-5 ACC) fell 15-7 to No. 20 Virginia (4-4, 3-1) on Sunday afternoon at the Seminole Lacrosse Complex.

The Cavaliers opened the game with two quick first-quarter goals. At the 9:16 mark, Summer Harrell found a cutting Lydia Ward from behind the crease to put the Seminoles on the board. Four minutes later, Harrell scored to tie the game at 2-2. Virginia answered with a late goal to take a 3-2 lead into the second quarter.

Strong defense from both teams kept the game scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the second quarter before Virginia scored three straight goals. With 1:33 remaining in the half, Brooke Long drew a foul and capitalized on a free position opportunity to cut the deficit in half. Virginia carried a 6-3 lead into the break.

The Cavaliers extended their lead to 8-3 early in the third quarter. Ward responded, cutting inside two defenders from the 12-meter fan to score her second goal of the game. Virginia answered with another goal before Long converted her second free position shot of the day. The Cavaliers added two more goals to take an 11-5 lead into the fourth quarter.

Virginia opened the final period with a goal before the Seminoles again capitalized on a free position opportunity, this time from Meg Kenny for her 14th goal of the season.

Florida State's final goal came from a pair of freshmen, as Anna Ellis found Amelia Brite cutting to the crease. Virginia added two late goals to earn the 15-7 win.

The Seminoles had multiple multi-goal scorers for the fifth time this season. Long recorded her third two-goal game, while Ward added her second two-goal performance of the year to go along with her four-goal effort in the season opener. Ward also totaled five draw controls and three ground balls.

Kenny's goal extended her team-leading total to 14 on the season. Harrell recorded her fifth assist of the year and scored the 10th goal of her career.

Julia Ward made her first career start in goal for Florida State, finishing with seven saves.

The Seminoles remain at home next weekend as they host Virginia Tech on Saturday at the Seminole Lacrosse Complex. First draw is scheduled for 11 a.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ACCNX.
