Florida State women's soccer head coach Brian Pensky announced the addition of Jonathan Bornstein as an assistant coach on February 5, 2024.
"We are of course thrilled to add Jonny to our coaching staff. First and foremost, he is an extremely humble person with a tremendous work ethic," Pensky said. "Jonny had to fight and scratch and claw for everything that he achieved in his extremely successful playing career as nothing was ever handed to him. As the father of two young girls, Jonny couldn't be more excited to work with our phenomenal group of women. We are confident that his breadth of experiences along with his charismatic personality, will help to continue to develop our players at a high very level."
Bornstein comes to Tallahassee following a long and illustrious professional career. A graduate of UCLA, Bornstein was picked in the fourth round of the 2006 MLS Draft by the USA Chivas and made an immediate impact. Bornstein was named the MLS Rookie of the Year in 2006 and followed that up with back-to-back MLS All-Star appearances in 2007 and 2008. In five seasons with Chivas USA, Bornsteid made 117 starts in 123 appearances as a defender. Bornstein then went on to play eight seasons in Mexico's premier league, LIGA MX. He played for three different clubs, Tigres de la UANL (2010-14), Atlante (2013-14) and Querétaro (2014-18), where he made 128 appearances and helped his club to a Liga MX Championship in 2011, a Copa MX title in 2016 and a Supercopa MX title in 2017.
Bornstein went on to play one season in the Israeli Premier League for Maccabi Netanya where he started in 35 matches and made 36 appearances. Bornstein returned to the states where he joined the Chicago Fire in July of 2019. Bornstein played four seasons with the Fire and joined forces with current FSU assistant coach Bobby Shuttleworth while in Chicago. Bornstein finished his professional career with CDS Vida, a club in the Honduran topflight in 2023.
Bornstein also had some success with Team USA as he made the U.S. Men's National Team and scored a goal in his first career appearance on January 20, 2007, against Denmark. Borstein remained a part of the U.S. squad until 2011. He helped the U.S. win the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2007 and made another appearance in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2007. Bornstein played in several World Cup qualifying matches and made two starts at left back for USMNT in the final group stage match and the Round of 16 match in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In total, Bornstein made 38 appearances for the USMNT.
"Earning this position means a great deal to me. It's an honor to be able to transition from my professional playing career into coaching at one of the most prestigious universities with one of the most prestigious women's soccer programs. I feel extremely lucky and extremely blessed to join the program. I'm very grateful to Coach Pensky for allowing me this opportunity to continue to grow and learn what it is like to be collegiate coach," Bornstein said.
