Fifth-Seeded Women’s Basketball Faces Wake Forest in ACC Second Round

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the second time in three games, Florida State Women’s Basketball faces Wake Forest in the ACC Second Round held on Thursday, March 2, at 11 a.m.
- TV: Thursday’s game vs. Wake Forest will air on the ACC Network.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- No. 5 seed Florida State (23-8) plays in its 32nd ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament beginning Thursday against the winner of 12th-seeded Wake Forest and 13th-seeded Virginia at 11 a.m. The ACC Second Round matchup will air on the ACC Network.
- Freshman Ta’Niya Latson and sophomore Makayla Timpson earned plenty of recognition with several conference awards each. Latson was named the ACC Rookie of the Year, chosen to the All-ACC First Team and also to the ACC All-Freshman Team. Timpson was recognized as the ACC Most Improved Player, named to the All-ACC Second Team and also placed on the ACC All-Defensive Team.
- Head Coach Brooke Wyckoff takes her second team to the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament. In her interim season in 2020-21, an FSU team predicted eighth in the league earned a No. 4 seed at the conference tournament. This season, her FSU squad predicted ninth in the ACC earns a No. 5 seed in Greensboro. Both of her teams have elevated themselves by four spots comparing prediction to regular-season finish.
- The Seminoles begin the ACC Tournament with a NET ranking of 20th.
- Florida State went a combined 3-0 against possible ACC Second Round opponents Wake Forest (2-0) and Virginia (1-0). In two combined games against the Demon Deacons, the Seminoles had three players average double figures in Ta’Niya Latson (17.0), Valencia Myers (15.0) and Makayla Timpson (12.0).
- Florida State has reached six semifinals in the ACC Tournament as well as two finals appearances, with the last coming in the 2020 ACC Championship game vs. NC State. FSU also reached the finals in the 2015 tournament against Notre Dame.
- The Seminoles enter the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament ranking in the Top 10 nationally in free throws made per game (16.5; fourth), blocks per game (5.7; sixth), defensive rebounds per game (30.9; sixth), rebounds per game (43.6; eighth) and scoring offense (80.9; ninth).
- Florida State’s 15 wins against the NET Top 100 are tied for the ninth-most in the country.
- The Seminoles’ 12 ACC wins this season are their most since winning 13 in the 2017-18 season.
- FSU is a No. 5 seed in the ACC Tournament for the fourth time. It was also a No. 5 seed in 1992, 2004 and 2007.
- Sophomore forward Makayla Timpson’s 13 double-doubles this season are tied for the second-most in a season at FSU with Kiah Gillespie (2018-19). The record is 15 by Natasha Howard (2013-14).
- With 23 wins this season, FSU has a chance to reach its seventh 25-win season in program history.
- Graduate forward Valencia Myers recently played her best game of the season at Wake Forest on Feb. 23, coming up clutch with a season-high 18 points, six rebounds and two blocks in a 61-60 win over the Demon Deacons.
- Florida State’s 80.9 points per game marks the first time the program has led the ACC in scoring offense in the regular season. FSU ranks ninth nationally in scoring and has scored 70+ points in 28 of 31 games played.
- Last year, No. 9 seed FSU faced No. 8 seed Boston College in what was an NCAA Tournament play-in game in the ACC Second Round. Erin Howard delivered 16 points and five rebounds in that crucial 63-58 win for the Noles.
- The Seminoles’ 176 blocked shots this season, which rank third nationally, are a program record.
- For the first time in program history, FSU delivered a 5-0 record against the ACC’s four North Carolina schools during the regular season.
- The Seminoles own five NET Top 50 wins against Duke (9), NC State (19), North Carolina (23), Purdue (47) and Miami (49). FSU’s three Top 25 wins came by an average scoring margin of 13.0 points.
- Florida State is one of eight current programs to make the Big Dance each of the last nine post-seasons, joining Baylor, Louisville, Maryland, South Carolina, Stanford, Tennessee and UConn. FSU will extend that to 10 straight this season.
- An 80-66 home win vs. Georgia Tech on Feb. 19 marked FSU’s eighth consecutive year of securing double-digit wins in ACC play. The 2020-21 season (9-7) was not factored in because FSU was unable to play a complete ACC schedule.
