Carlson Highlights World Championships with Silver

Tallahassee, Fla. – Seven athletes with ties to the Florida State swimming and diving team competed at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships that ended in Fukuoka, Japan on June 30.
Former standout Molly Carlson (2016-2020) took home the first-ever silver medal in 20m women's high diving.
After the first two rounds, Carlson sat in third place with a score of 150.50. She jumped to second place in the third round and finished as the runner-up after her final dive with a total of 322.80. Carlson led Team Canada's silver, bronze and fourth-place effort in the event.
Carlson will compete at the fourth stop of the 2023 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, starting on Wednesday in Takachiho, Japan. She has finished second in each of the first three stops that included Boston, Paris and Polignano.
Florida State had six swimmers racing in the pool from July 22-29.

Rising fifth-year Peter Varjasi swam just off his personal best (22.50) in the 50m free, touching at 22.54 to finish in 42nd place.
He was also a part of two relays, leading Germany off to an eighth-place finish in the mixed 4x100m free relay. In prelims, Varjasi clocked his career best, touching at 48.93, helping the Germans secure the eighth and last spot in the final with a time of 3:26.78.
At night, Varjasi touched at 49.06 as the lead off swimmer as Germany touched eighth (3:27.18).
Varjasi anchored the Germans in the men's 4x100m free relay to a ninth-place finish to start the meet, splitting 48.19 (3:14.04).
Rising sophomore Max Wilson swam a time of 56.65 in the 100m back for 40th place and touched 43rd in the 50m back at 26.62.
Former Seminole Max McCusker (2018-2022) helped Team Ireland place 13th in the men's 4x100m medley relay, splitting 52.27 in the fly leg. Individually, McCusker placed 40th in the 100m fly at 53.46.
Emma Terebo (2017-21), represented France in the women's 200m back. She placed 24th, touching at 2:13.95.
Ida Hulkko (2018-19) represented Finland in the women's 50m and 100m breaststroke events. She placed 21st in the 50m (30.98) and 24th (1:07.58) in the 100m.
Julio Horrego (2017-19) competed for Honduras, placing 37th in the 200m breast (2:20.70) and 43rd in the 100m breast (1:03.04).

Herbet Secures Olympic Trials Bid
Rising senior Mason Herbet punched his ticket to the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials by qualifying in the 100m fly at the 2023 Futures Championships in Ocala, Fla., this weekend.
Herbet secured the top seed behind a personal best in at 52.90, achieving the time standard (53.59) for Trials, which will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium from June 15-23, 2024.
Herbet also swam his career best in the 100m breast at 1:02.25 and 200m IM at 2:03.69. He was just off the Olympic Trials standards (1:02.19; 2:03.49) in both of those races.
The men's team captain finished the meet with three medals, earning silver in the 100m fly (54.00), 100m breast (1:02.25), and 200 IM (2:03.49).
Freeman Competes at British Summer Champs
Rising sophomore Sophie Freeman competed at the British Summer Championships at Ponds Forge International Sports Center from July 22-28.
Throughout the week, Freeman brought home two bronze medals in the fly events. She placed third in the 200m fly at 2:15.75 and 100m fly 1:00.32, which was just off her career best (1:00.27).
Freeman also finished fifth in the 50m fly (27.68), 13th in the 100m free (58.08) and 17th in the 100m back (1:04.65).
Noles Headed to U23 European Championships
The Florida State swimming and diving teams will be represented by six student-athletes at the inaugural LEN (European Swimming Federation) U23 Championships in Dublin, Ireland. The meet will run from August 11-13.
Returning Seminoles Yordan Yanchev (Bulgaria), Jaka Pusnik (Slovenia), Jokubas Keblys (Lithuania) and Julia Mansson (Sweden) will be in action along with newcomers Mayitsa Ratiu (Romania) and Tobias Schulrath (Germany).
