TALLAHASSEE – No. 10-ranked Florida State (30-5, 10-5) completed a weekend sweep of Miami (16-19, 6-12 ACC) with a 6-4 win Saturday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium. The victory capped a 4-0 week against in-state rivals after beating Florida Tuesday night and winning the first two games against the Hurricanes.
Cam Smith led the way offensively for the Seminoles. The sophomore from Lake Worth, Florida, hit 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a two-run home run, his ninth of the year. FSU's first six hits of the game went for extra-bases, with two doubles from Max Williams, Smith's double and home run and doubles from Alex Lodise and James Tibbs.
Smith's home run gave FSU a 5-2 lead in the third inning; Marco Dinges capped FSU's scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Andrew Armstrong improved to 5-0 with 4.1 innings of relief. The senior allowed three hits and one run over 65 pitches. Connor Hults needed just one pitch to escape a jam in the top of the ninth, forcing a lineout to Lodise at shortstop to strand a pair of runners after Miami had scored earlier in the inning to cut the lead to 6-4.
Carson Dorsey pitched 3.2 innings and allowed three runs, his second start of the year. John Abraham struck out the first batter he faced to end a threat in the fourth inning. Armstrong entered with two runners on base in the fifth inning and forced a double play as Cal Fisher made a diving stop up the middle, flipped to Lodise who completed the throw to Daniel Cantu at first base.
Florida State swept Florida and Miami in the same season for the first time since 1960. Dick Howser Stadium hosted 19,157 fans this weekend, the largest three-game attendance in stadium history.
