BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 9 Florida State baseball finished a three-game sweep of No. 25 Virginia Tech with a 4-2 win on Sunday afternoon.
The Seminoles (28-7, 11-4 ACC) won three games in 27 hours over the Hokies (23-13, 9-9 ACC) to earn their first road ACC series sweep since victories at Miami in March, 2021. FSU swept VT for the first time since 2015 and in Blacksburg for the first time since 2008.
Florida State earned its second ACC series sweep of the season and fifth overall. The Seminoles have won eight of their nine series in 2025, four of five in the conference and all three on the road. This weekend was FSU's first top-25 series of the campaign and the team improves to 3-1 against ranked foes.
Sunday was a comeback win at Atlantic Union Bank Park, as Virginia Tech took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before Florida State answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth and two in the sixth. The Hokies plated one in the seventh but could not get any closer.
Sophomore left-handed starter Wes Mendes allowed one run on six hits in 5.2 innings. As he improved to 5-1 on the season, he struck out four and walked three. Sophomore righty Peyton Prescott relieved Mendes and held Tech to one run on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks in the final 3.1 to earn his second save of the season.
In total in three games, Florida State used just six pitchers, two each game, and allowed a total of four runs.
Offensively on a warmer and sun-soaked Sunday early afternoon, four Seminoles had two hits. Sophomore left fielder Chase Williams had two hits and two RBI, both career-high-tying totals, to pace the way. He added a run scored.
FSU scored its four runs on 11 hits and VT plated two runs on nine hits. Both teams committed one error.
Virginia Tech took its first lead of the series in the first inning, as a sac fly scored one after back-to-back singles led off the game. Consecutive strikeouts ended the inning and left the bases loaded. A double play ended the second, as Mendes stranded one while throwing just eight pitches. Another two Hokies were left on the bases in the third.
Florida State tied it at 1-1 in the fourth thanks to junior center fielder Max Williams, who led off the inning with a single and scored on a sac fly by Chase Williams. Mendes then needed just seven pitches to retire the side in order in the bottom half.
The Seminoles took a 2-1 lead one inning later on a two-out wild pitch that brought in freshman catcher Hunter Carns.
FSU added two more in the sixth to make it a 4-1 ballgame. Sophomore third baseman Cal Fisher singled with one out and scored on Chase Williams' triple. Two pitches later, Williams crossed home on a sac fly by redshirt freshman designated hitter Brody DeLamielleure.
Mendes got two flyouts around a double in the sixth, and Prescott came in to post an inning-ending strikeout. A leadoff triple led to one run in the seventh, but Prescott avoided further damage and left one on with FSU ahead 4-2. The righty retired the side in order in the eighth.
In the ninth, a two-out double and wild pitch put a runner on third, but the tying run grounded out to end it.
Florida State returns home to begin a five-game homestand. It commences on Tuesday, April 15, at 6 p.m. ET, against USF, and continues from April 17-19 against Virginia. Tickets are available at Seminoles.com/Tickets or by calling the FSU ticket office at 850-644-1830.
