Comeback Falls Short in Road Defeat

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 9 Florida State baseball team's comeback bid came up short in a 5-4 loss at Florida on Tuesday night in Gainesville, Florida.
The Seminoles (25-7) rallied to erase two one-run deficits in the first five innings and scored two in the seventh with two outs to make it a one-run game. FSU had the tying run on third and the go-ahead score at second with two outs in the inning, but could not get any closerasagainst the Gators (21-14) maintained the lead.).
In the final regular-season meeting between the two teams, FSU scored four runs on eight hits and UF scored five runs on six hits. Neither team committed an error.
Redshirt freshman left fielder Brody DeLamielleure hit his fourth home run of the season and had two hits, one RBI and three runs scored. Freshman first baseman Myles Bailey also had two hits and an RBI.
Florida took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout. After registering two hits in the first and one in the second, the Seminoles tied it in the third on a sacrifice fly by junior center fielder Max Williams to score DeLamielleure.
The Gators answered to regain a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on back-to-back two-out doubles. Two more reached in the fourth for FSU, but a double play ended the inning.
DeLamielleure's home run to right-center led off the fifth and again tied the game at 2-2. A pair of Noles walked to put two on, but a double play and strikeout halted the go-ahead threat.
UF took its largest lead of the night, at 5-2, thanks to a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Seminoles fought back with a pair of two-out runs in the seventh inning. DeLamielleure, who led off the frame with a walk, scored the first run on a base hit to center by Bailey. Junior right fielder Gage Harrelson then made it a one-run game when he slid home on a passed ball. A flyout ended the inning with two on and a 5-4 ballgame.
Redshirt freshman left-hander Payton Manca followed by retiring the side in order in the seventh, an inning after he entered the game and got all three outs in a scoreless sixth with two left on. Sophomore righty Chris Knier tossed a shutout eighth to keep it a one-run game. In the ninth, FSU could not get the tying run aboard.
Florida State stays on the road for a top-25 ACC series at No. 25 Virginia Tech from April 11-13. The three-game set begins on Friday, April 11, at 6 p.m. ET, followed by a Saturday contest at 1 p.m. The finale in Blacksburg at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park is on Sunday at noon ET.
