TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 2 Florida State baseball team suffered an 8-3 loss to No. 4 North Carolina to begin the final regular-season series of 2025 on Thursday night at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida.
In a matchup between two of the top four teams in the ACC standings and a rematch from the 2024 College World Series, UNC took a 1-0 lead in the first and made it 4-0 in the fifth. FSU scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth and added two in the bottom of the sixth, but that came after North Carolina added four in the top half.
The Seminoles (36-12, 16-9 ACC) were held to three runs on four hits. The Tar Heels (38-11, 17-10 ACC) scored eight runs on eight hits.
Junior shortstop Alex Lodise hit his team-high-tying 17th home run of the season and had two RBI. Sophomore third baseman Cal Fisher had two hits and scored one run. He extended his career-long hit streak to 15 games, second-longest on the team this season.
Junior left-handed starter Jamie Arnold suffered just his second loss of the year and falls to 6-2. In 5.0 innings, he allowed four runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. His UNC counterpart, right-hander Jake Knapp, threw a complete game and struck out seven with no walks to improve to 11-0.
North Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run. In the bottom half, Fisher doubled for Florida State's first hit of the game, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning. Arnold left two on in the third and fourth.
In the fifth, UNC made it 4-0 on a two-RBI triple and a sacrifice fly. FSU answered with a run in the bottom half to make it 4-1 as Fisher scored on a sac fly after he led off the frame with a double.
The Tar Heels scored four in the sixth to extend their lead to 8-1. A sacrifice bunt brought in the first run and a sac fly scored the next, as sophomore left fielder Chase Williams made a fantastic catch near the foul pole. A two-run home run brought in the final runs.
Lodise followed with a two-run homer of his own in the bottom of the sixth. His 17th in 2025 and 42nd of his career made it 8-3 as the long ball to left scored freshman catcher Hunter Carns.
Two Carolina baserunners were stranded in the eighth and a double play ended the top of the ninth.
