TALLAHASSEE - The No. 10 Florida State softball (28-4, 6-0) completed the sweep over Cal (10-22, 1-8) with a 9-1 win in five innings on Sunday afternoon at JoAnne Graf Field.Â
After a scoreless first inning, Makenna Sturgis drew a one-out walk and Marin Heller hit her first career home run to deep left center to put the Noles up 2-0. Hayley Griggs kept the rally going with a walk, and Isa Torres singled to put two runners on for Jaysoni Beachum. Beachum delivered with a single to shallow center to score Griggs to put the Noles up 3-0. Shelby McKenzie drove in her seventh run of the series on a sacrifice fly to put the Noles up 4-0 after two.Â
Cal got a run back on a double to first base that took a bad hop to cut the lead to three. The Bears loaded the bases with two outs, but Makenna Reid came in and recorded a pop up to get the Noles out of the inning.Â
Kennedy Harp led off the bottom of the third with her 12th career triple, and Sturgis brought her home on a sac fly to make it 5-1.Â
After Reid put a zero up in the fourth, the Noles got back to work as McKenzie singled, and Ashtyn Danley walked to put runners in scoring position for Harp who delivered with a single to make it 6-1. Anna Hinde immediately smoked the first pitch she saw over the left field wall to put the Noles up 9-1.
Ashtyn Danley got the start for the Noles in the circle and went 2.2 innings and struck out four. Reid earned the win as she went 1.1 innings and allowed just one hit. Bella Dimitrijevic closed out the game in the fifth with two strikeouts to retire Cal in order.Â
