TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State plays host to seven non-conference games – including Georgia in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge – as Head Coach Leonard Hamilton released the first half of the Seminoles' 2023-24 schedule. The Seminoles open their season with two consecutive home games against Kennesaw State (Nov. 10) and Central Michigan (Nov. 13), play Georgia (Nov. 29), then close the month of December with four straight non-ACC home games against SMU (Dec. 16), North Florida (Dec. 19), Winthrop (Dec. 22) and Lipscomb (Dec. 30).
Florida State will play each of their 11 non-conference games in Florida with games in four different parts of the state. The Seminoles play seven games at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee, while traveling to play at Florida in Gainesville (Nov. 17), in the fourth annual Sunshine Slam in Daytona Beach (Nov. 20 and 21) and in the AutoNation Orange Bowl Classic in Sunrise against USF (Dec. 9). Florida State faces UNLV (Nov. 20) and either Colorado or Richmond (Nov. 21) in the Sunshine Slam at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach.
"Our non-conference schedule will allow us to prepare a large group of new players to face the rigors of ACC play," said Hamilton. "Because we expect to play at least one ACC game in December, the competition we will play against early will give all of our guys an opportunity to play our system against high-major quality opponents in preparation for the gauntlet we will face in the ACC."
Hamilton expects the ACC to release the full conference schedule in early September.
Florida State's game against Georgia in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge is highlighted by the Bulldogs' first appearance in Tallahassee since December 1, 1981. The Seminoles are 9-3 against Georgia in games played in Tallahassee.
The Seminoles' game against the Bulldogs marks a special night for former Florida State Hall of Famer (as a player and coach), and former Georgia Head Coach Hugh Durham.
Durham was a standout guard at Florida State before becoming the Seminoles' head coach in 1966. He was 229-96 over 12 seasons and led Florida State to three NCAA Tournaments, including a national runner-up finish in 1972. Durham became Georgia's head coach in 1979 and compiled a 297-215 record in 17 seasons. He led the Bulldogs to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1983, which culminated with a trip to the Final Four in Albuquerque. As Florida State's head coach, Durham was 1-1 against Georgia. As Georgia's head coach, he was 1-1 against Florida State.
The Seminoles' season-opener against Kennesaw State marks the second game between the two teams, and is Florida State's first season-opener against a team from the state of Georgia. The opener against Kennesaw State will be played the night before the nationally ranked Seminoles' football team plays host to Miami (Nov. 11) in Doak Campbell Stadium on the FSU campus. Florida State's second home game of the season comes against Central Michigan as an on-campus game in the Sunshine Slam.
The Seminoles face UNLV (Nov. 20) in the Beach Bracket semifinals of the Sunshine Slam at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach. The Beach Bracket of the Sunshine Slam includes Florida State, UNLV, Colorado and Richmond. Following its game against UNLV, the Seminoles will play either Colorado or Richmond (Nov. 21). The championship game of the event is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Nov. 21 with the third-place game scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The Seminoles' game at Florida continues a series that has been played each year since the 1978-79 season when the Seminoles took a 68-61 decision in a game played in the Jacksonville (Fla.) Coliseum. Florida State has won seven of the last nine overall games, and three of the last four games against the Gators in games played on Florida's home court.
Hamilton's talented veteran group of upperclassmen not only added a year of development to their resumes, but they, too, earned playing time against the nation's toughest competition. Graduate students, redshirt seniors and seniors are now the prevalent class designations on Florida State's 2023-24 roster. Darin Green (fifth-year) finished as one of three players in the ACC with 90 or more 3-point field goals made, and averaged 34.1 minutes played per game. Cam'Ron Fletcher (10.8 ppg and 7.5 rpg) was well on his way to an All-ACC type of season before injuring his knee on December 3 at Virginia and missing the remainder of the season. Jaylan Gainey (sixth-year, 65 career games played) missed the entire 2022-23 season. He's a two-time Ivy League Defender of the Year. Josh Nickelberry (87 career games played) is a graduate student who has played two seasons in the ACC at Louisville (2019-20, 2020-21) and who averaged in double figure scoring in the last two seasons (10.7 ppg) at La Salle. Jamir Watkins (third year) is a transfer from VCU who has played in 61 career games and who helped the Rams to the 2023 NCAA Tournament. He has scored in double figures in 26 games during the first three years of his career.
Hamilton welcomes back of veteran group of underclassmen – Chandler Jackson, Jalen Warley, Cameron Corhen, De'Ante Green, Baba Miller and Tom House – for the 2023-24 season. Jackson (12.2 mpg), Warley (21 starts, 27.9 mpg), Corhen (21 starts, 23.9 mpg), Green (6.3 mpg) and Miller (17.3 mpg following a 16-game NCAA suspension) and House (29 games played) all earned more playing time in Hamilton's system that consisted mostly of first of second year players.
